For Windows I use Avira Antivir PersonalEdition Classic.

Setup->user interface-> untick "Show splash-screen at startup".

AVG Free Edition, always worked well for me.

avast antivirus home edition, and when virus cant be deleted via normal scanning it has marvelous option of scanning before loading operation system

I disabled the Windows Security Center (the windows firewall, automatic updates etc)

I use: AVG Free, AVG Spyware (cracked), AVG Anti root kit, Hi-jack This, Ccleaner, Uniblue Registry Cleaner.

Yeah i use a lot these apps, they dont take much resources for me, i have a fairly decent computer.

When I was a Windows user I used Mcafee/Norton until they started getting super bloated, then I just used common sense.

However, I recommend AVG Free Edition to my family and friends. I used to do the Anti-Virus cracking so I wouldn't have to pay but it just wasn't worth it. Also with each new version you had to find a new way to get around the security. Don't forget that you are constantly connecting to their servers for updated virus definitions, I wouldn't be surprised if they could validate your registration information when you do that.
