'Anthem' To Be Released In 2019

anthem.JPG

Originally expected for a late 2018 release, it seems like BioWare's new IP Anthem will see the light of day in 2019.

The news come from an interview of EA CFO Blake Jorgensen with the Wall Street Journal. Jorgensen maintains that it is not a delay due to development issues as suggested by a Kotaku article last week.

The report also mentions that EA is planning the release of a new Battlefield game in October and as such Anthem would get more attention if it came out in a quieter quarter.

BOOOOO EA BOOOOOOO BIOWARE IS BAAAAD BOOOOO ANTHEM WILL BE BAD BOOOOOOOOOO WHO CARES BOOOOOOOO HAHA SJW BIOWARE AM BAAAD BOOOOOO GAME TOTALLY GONNA HAVE MICROTRANSACTIONS BOOOOOO DLC BOOOOOOOOO

I think that about covers all the circle jerking.

Anyways, early gameplay for the game looked pretty ok, if they decide to use this additional delay for more polishing then that's ok with me.

I'm more interested in how that new Battlefield game's gonna fare. Y'all best have your ears up to if you're interested in Anthem -- whatever monetization schemes October's Battlefield game launches with will likely be what we'll see in Anthem. That should let you gauge the level of worry you should have.

Just cause it's circle jerking doesn't mean it's wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anthem will have the worst monetization scheme EA could come up with (it's EA after all) and Bioware will be shut down after the obligatory shitstorm by the community. I'm sure that it won't necessarily be the game itself that's bad when it won't sell as much copies as expected... But it could very well be a bugfest AND a ripoff.

FTFY

EA has already held their hand open. It's not circlejerking if it's accurate. On my opinion, Bioware is dead. They haven't put out a good story in a while, the good creative designers have already jumped ship. The game will have an open world with little more than ponds of content, the story will be mediocre, and the mechanics will be rehashed with flying added as a spice. I predict it's going to be a close copy of Dragon Age Inquisition, reskinned, with little learned. As a new property, it will do okay, EA will claim it didn't meet sales expectations, Bioware will make one more game, again with okay sales, then EA will ritually sacrifice it.

I have a hate/OK relationship with loot boxes. If they are not put into every game they make and are just cosmetics, fine. Better than companies spamming dlc with cut content.

The biggest problem becomes when they start spamming lootboxes and make the system p2w, running the actual game itself. Destiny 2 and Battlefront was so concerned over loot boxes, that they actually forgot to make a good game.

Here's the thing. Lootboxes are content, just stripped from the game, and charged at a premium. Shadow of War is a blatantly obvious example of this, where the Orcs can be bought outright. For games like Destiny, the bright engrams are a disassociation of loot from the bosses. I played Runescape, so I'm gonna use it instead of WoW for this comparison: It would be like killing the King Black Dragon and getting a godsword from a lootbox off a drop. It makes no fucking sense. Why even create the boss fight to kill Gough in Dark Souls when you can just sell the armor, either in a lootbox or outright.

These are blatant examples in the past where things could have easily been cut from the game, turned cosmetic, and sold wholesale. I can't give any examples of cosmetics in games recently because I don't play games with them, it just props up the playtime of the game, extending it's perceived life, it's not worth it. A blatant one I can think of though, is Overwatch and their skins. Complete the holiday event? Get a fucking holiday lootbox? Remember in any other MMO with holiday events where you just got the item instead?

While on the whole, people like to make games development to be a zero sum system, it's why we have people complaining about ports for the switch from indies who want new games, thinking that time could be used to make the next Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild, even though Nintendo is a separate entity. However, internally, it is a zero sum game, I would rather they not faff about designing lootboxes to look enticive and the systems propping them up, and instead see a fucking dungeon with the item at the end. Like it or not, lootbox development time takes away from actual game design time, and by nature cuts content in favor of selling more art.

Just from the picture alone, you can already tell it will probably be some sort of TitanFall / Destiny type thing.

Not interested.

Using Overwatch as a example, the way most games were doing it before, if you want all the content, you would have to buy every single thing that came after the game. Not just skins, but maps, game modes, heroes or anything else. That or treat it as if it was a subscription base mmo. After paying online on consoles, that is.

With Overwatch loot boxes, you could at least just buy the base game and get free content later on. Eventually get all the skins by playing, the core gameplay isn't touched and the online isn't fracture on who bought the DLC or not.

So, yes, while getting everything once you pay for the game one time is ideal, lootboxes done right, is better than buying every single thing after the game is out.
