Animanatee v1.3
The animation tool

A new release of DekuTree64's animation tool, the big update today being the export format changed to the more standard AVI. Download and full changelog below.

[title:Changelog]- Error checking on file access.
- Changed export format to .avi instead of .flc.
- Added a button so you can save without exporting, since it takes a while.
- Added a progress bar when saving.

Sounds great, but aren't AVI's huge or are they just a container format?

Both. AVI is for "Audio Video Interleaved".
It can contain raw uncompressed Video/Audio (I think Animanatee uses this to export) or almost other any video codec (e.g. DivX).

But I think the .avi shouldn't be too big, because its just 256x192 Video.

Depending on how its encoded and all and which codec is used. but no avi is usually not huge. At least not compaired to other containers used for different encodes.

I just woke up so if that looks like it is gibberish, I am sorry.

I've been messing around with this for a couple minutes and I have to say......this app PWNS!! Look at a little sample I cooked up in less than 5 minutes:
TEST-1.gif

Not much but I was just messing around. Its only 2 frames of animation and the generated .avi file was only 5kb. After I converted to .gif in Ulead Gif Animator 5, it was less than 2kb.

That's awesome!!! it's what i've being waiting for an animation tool for the ds to quickly scribble stuff on the go thnx!!!

It still needs some more tools but it's a great start and I hope to see it developed further

GREAT! I cant wait to encode an avi on a 66MHZ ARM9!

I think digital camera proccessors run at similar speeds or even lower and they can compress fast. Sure they are optimised and build for such purposes but I don't think the ds's arm(s) will have problem compressing. But there are other functions more important that would be nice to add instead of bothering with encoding avis.

After all uncompressed avi are best suited for such an app, as anything related with animation, since you want the best possible quality to start with and then compress at delivery time depending on the needs of the project.

Anyway, I was really happy to see this first thing when I woke up. Thnx again DekuTree64

  • FlareReZ @ FlareReZ:
devkitPro by defaults use C and C++. So I suppose you start off with C first and then move onto C++.
