Just mail townspeople some fruit (be sure to write "fruit" in the letter as well) and they'll usually send you some fruit back which may or may not be different from your 'native' fruit...

You need the shovel first. Then you dig a hole, and drop the fruit into the hole, and bury it back up. In a few days a tree will grow and will start to grow fruit.

Actually, just write your townspeople letters with presents. Give them anything and say anything no fruit requirement. About half of the replies will include a piece of foreign fruit.
