So its now 2021.
I want to help a friend (has legit switch) with bells via local play (with my hacked switch).
Is my friend at risk for getting banned if they ever decide to play online in New Horizon?
Also which option is safer for them? That I visit their island or they visit mines?

There is zero risk of a ban for the legitimate system that is communicating with the hacked system over local play. It doesn't matter which island is visited.
