Angry Video Game Nerd announces new game "AVGN 8-bit" compatible with a real NES

The Angry Video Game Nerd is once again back into the videogame creation landscape, with a brand new videogame announced titled "Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit" (or AVGN 8bit for short).

James Rolfe, known online as The Angry Video Game Nerd for his internet video series of an angry gamer playing through obnoxious games, has been quite the popular character in the gaming online space for something close to two decades now, and alongside his popularity, he previously released two games "AVGN Adventures" and "AVGN II: ASSimilation", which were both bundles together and released in 2020 as "AVGN I & II Deluxe" for Steam and Switch, with PS4 and Xbox One ports releasing in 2021.

"AVGN 8-bit" will be the Nerd's third videogame outing, focusing on an action shooter, similar to the early Mega Man games on NES, which sees the Nerd going through several stages and enemies and all kinds of ordeals. While the game will be releasing for modern platforms, the game will also have a release as an NES cartridge, compatible with the real hardware of an NES.

AVGN 8bit description said:
The ULTIMATE NERD RAGE is back in Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit - an all-new action platformer set in the AVGN universe! As The Nerd, blast your way across a host of pixel art levels crawling with zombies, mechanical skeletons, ghoulish reapers, and more!

THE 8-BIT EXPERIENCE

Run, jump, slide, and shoot your way through levels in this new 8-bit installment featuring the Angry Video Game Nerd! It doesn't just LOOK like an 8-bit game--there will also be a CARTRIDGE VERSION available for actual retro hardware!

THE AVGN UNIVERSE IN 8-BIT FORM

Journey through multiple levels inspired by the AVGN universe, and blast away at enemies themed around each level! Slide below platforms, pick up power-ups, and take alternate routes to get to the boss room!

AVGN 8bit can now be wishlisted on Steam, and it will eventually be available for Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation and Xbox consoles (though the announcement doesn't specify which consoles).

I had a thought...
Whether the game ends up being good or bad, it will still have a loyal fanbase.
If the game is good, people will remember it for that. But if it's bad, people will remember it for all the glitches you have work around to be able to finish the game.

It's a rather unique situation AVGN is in, which would let this happen :P

Also, slight aside...
I've got my hands on a crappy handheld NES-on-a-chip console... it would be funny if the mapper they'll use will be compatible with them, so I could hack it into the menu, and play this on a clone console, completing the circle :D

Stopped watching AVGN a while back. Youtube tamed him. He's more of a Kind/But not really Irratated Video Game Nerd now.
It’s more like he doesn't really care about the character anymore and he is really only doing it for the money at this point - which is great, good for him and being able to support his family like that, but you can tell the passion is gone. It's also not really what he wants to do anyways, he wants/wanted to be an actual filmmaker and I don't think he saw himself doing this character for this long. Channel as a whole took a noticeable downturn when Screenwave took over, and by extension took over AVGN and writing the majority of the scripts/playing the games.

They could have just made a proper AVGN Adventures 3, especially since they got everyone who made the originals for the remaster with the extra level set already.

I have to give them props where it is due, though.
They effectively did a whole homebrew game for the NES, which is something not many indie developers can claim even when they go for the "8-bit" aesthetic, which they know very little about and absolutely swarm the sprites with colours up the ass and claim it's inspired by "8-bit".
Kudos for their dev team who did their proper research and coding to make this all work on a real NES.
i mean there is a lot of devs making nes homebrew tho i think many devs for the updated more vibrant aesthetic and if they were to make a demake well awesome. Shouldnt be required by every dev to go back to older hardware tho its a lot tougher to code in c++ then u think. and trust with old nintendo code. Coding is half the battle lol

this guy used to be fucking hilarious when he was on GT/screw attack but once that closed and he went to SCREWTUBE he mellowed out. probably due to SCREWTUBES censor laws not allowing him to be bad shit angry like he used to be.

It's only when he was with Screenwave, the quality wasn't as good as his old videos, and it burnt out a lot of his time making episodes.

Damn! And I was only going to go as far as the Amiga for mine! I've been outdone!

Crazy how newer developers make such good NES games. Check out Micro Mages too when you get the chance.
You know, I've been interested in Micro Mages for a while. The design gives me a Bubble Bobble-like vibe, since it has simultaneous co-op. Is it genuinely fun?

Looks like they pulled the specs for the Steam release out of his ass. I now want to see someone actually try it with that spec.

On a side note, will they release the ROM for those who have flash carts or is it using some kind of unique mapper?
If all you need to run this is a nes emulator, the base specs don't need to be higher then a pentium celeron 166mhz with MMX technology

I'd expect an Amiga 1200 with RAM expansion to run a basic NES emulator, however W10/11 have higher requirements e.g. w10 32bit 1gb RAM.

Well, I am both interested and uninterested in this. Never played the original AVGN games, but my younger brother seemed to like them. On the other hand I grew up watching AVGN videos as they came out. I remember when the Big Rigs video came out. Might have been the peak for AVGN with me. So I'm interested to see how the game turns out.

I tried to watch an episode of AVGN once this past year. Note that I said "tried"; the overuse of expletives is a bit too much for me. He might seem like a funny guy if he wasn't so crude - one can still be volatile without such language. Ever heard of Don Rickles?

To be fair, that IS his whole thing. He takes a shitty game, then goes completely over-the-top with crude humor criticizing every aspect of it with over-the-top analogies. In fact, most AVGN fans today think the humor of his later episodes is too tamed-down, with not enough crude humor!

A lot of times when there were legitimate points to be made about a game he'd explain them in concise enough detail. That offered a nice, more nuanced contrast from the expletive-filled rest of the episode.
He is the Angry Video Game Nerd, after all, and in a sea of thousands of perpetually angry video game nerds I'd argue going over the top is necessary to definitively set the bar
