Except that this guy lost his primary income source.

His own fault.

How is that "his own fault" the apps were pulled?

Because he tried to make a living off something illegal, hurr durr

I wonder if N64oid will ever be updated now!?

It was "individually" removed due to "critical reception" (not related to this ban wave) and said was suppose to be back in 6 months or more....I guess that's not going to work....

hmmm...so if we get these free now...

how will we get updates??

plus a crapload of free music download apps from the android market are GONE.
this happens constantly, free music download apps go up, then get taken off, then new ones pop up, then they are taken off, etc.

Making money off emulators that play copyrighted material, how could anyone even put them up on their store for money? The guy is just another crook by selling his product which runs illegal copies of games, that's worse then those of us who pirate, at least we aren't paying for emulators to do it.

so then you sir admit you do not use: a computer, an ipod, or any type of media playing device?

all of those were made to play/use copyrighted materials. an emulator is just that, except it is software based. what you put into that software is completely up to you. he put work into the software, he is not a crook, although i don't believe in charging for emulators. pay emulators usually are not as good as open source/freeware emulators. mostly because pay emulators would need to have employees so the people working on them would be limited. open source can have millions of people working on one project for a common goal.

Ah, go to the streets and sell hot buns instead of profiteering from open source code.

What a constructive post, I just doubt anyone wants to pay $500 for some emulators.

Besides, they're being ported over to a third-party app store like the first post said.

o.O Over $500? [censored] apps are all free.

I was talking about switching from Android to an Apple device.

Yeah, it's not like you pay for a flashcart to do it or anything. Just sayin'

I was shocked at how easy it was to get a GBA emulator through the Android marketplace. I recommended an old GBA game to someone and within 5 mins she had an emulator, the BIOS and the exact game in question, all downloaded through the marketplace. That was 6 months ago. I'm surprised they stayed up this long.

@MachaSign Sick of hearing about this. It's overblown. Both Yong and I even cut profits with original authors. You're clueless.

Even so, I am adamant. Emulators are not the way forward. Buy a Gameboy, Buy an N64. Don't get an emulator.

Because I want to carry my collection of gameboys and consoles around not to mention 40 cartridges and the tv and a power source.

Or you could use both. I have a GameBoy, and an N64. If I'm home, I would use my N64. If I wanted to play somewhere else, it's kind of tough to bring that stuff around.

Also with a phone, you most likely have it on you already. You don't have to carry a GameBoy with you. Less weight on you.

So, why not both? Actual console for collecting, emulator for convenience.

Edit:

Oh yeah. I ordered the Xperia Play on/around Friday. It's coming tomorrow I think... I only got it to use the emulators. I guess I'll just have to get them offline.

No, emulators are evil. Terrible things only casual gamers use emulators. If you want to play a game You must user the actual hardware. None of this emulation shit, even if you have to carry a portable TV and power source to play Ocarina of Time on the go.

Well I am still alive

Just no longer actively working on anything regarding Snes9x (although it does give me great joy to see Snes9x being ported to every system that you could possibly think off ). I am usually very busy but you can always reach me at _at_wordtgek.nl. (the email that sparrohawc used also works though).

That said, since Gary doesn't exclusively own the rights to Snes9x so its doubtful the Android developer asking money for it can even get claim it's 'ok'.

Some info on the Snes9? series of emulators, some of which is wrong in most of the interwebz (even incorrect on Wiki).

Snes96 was originally also written by me, it is often claimed (incorrectly) that Snes96 was solely written by Gary. This is completely untrue, Snes96 was not even started by Gary!

I started that project in '95 and released the first working version in '96, but due to time constraints I had to drop the project. When I did that I offered the code to a select few that e-mailed me. Gary was one of those select few and the only one that actually continued my work.

In '97 I got the emulator vibes again and started work on Snes97, my main goal was to fix a lot of the issues Snes96 had (mainly in the graphics department). Snes97 was completely written from scratch.

When I started Snes97, Gary (who was one of the few to ask for the Snes96 code and actually continue work) had started working on sound support and squashing a bunch of bugs in the instruction core.

Somewhere in '98 me and Gary decided to combine his continued work on Snes96 and my new work on Snes97 into Snes9x. Which is the emulator you all now use.

Since I have written a lot of code in both emulators, from the very start, Gary can't "give away" the code.

Can someone email me the info of the android dev?

I'll straighten this out and make him either distribute his work for free, or not at all. If needed I'll even stick a lawyer on it, since I can't stand people profiting off other people's work (let alone my own).
http://www.snes9x.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4454

TL;DR: yongzh contacted Gary (who worked on Snes9x) asking for permission. Gary said yes (though he has no legal rights to give people permission) and sent yongzh an old version of the source to build upon. Yongzh didn't use that, he used a newer version which he had no permission over.
Looks like Snes9x will be moving to GPL.

The licence they are under now doesn't allow commercial use for their code but Jerremy (Snes9x creator) said it's fine for Snes9x to switch to GPL (even though he doesn't like it) because he hasn't done anything for Snes9x in a long time.
