You can be pretty sure most of the major custom ROMs will continue to support the Galaxy Nexus for the foreseeable future. CM, PA, AOKP, Omni etc. And there'll probably be (unofficial) stock AOSP builds as well.

EDIT: There are already builds out there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507846 - has bugs which make it unsuitable for actual use at this point, but considering the amount of time 4.4 source has been available, you can be confident there'll be a decently usable ROM within a week or two.

EDIT: A few comments on the actual Android 4.4 release though; looks like they're removing almost everything from AOSP and making things closed source. For example, the launcher is now just a sort of "dummy" app, with all the actual content/functionality provided by the (closed source) Google Search app. (Almost?) all "Google" apps (which in many cases have replaced the AOSP apps; e.g. Google Music replaced AOSP Music a while back, AOSP Calender has been replaced by Google Calender, Hangouts replacing AOSP SMS app etc.) are closed source, and require the manufacture to be "licensed" or "partnered" or whatever term they use for it.

This isn't necessarily all bad though; Google apps get updated via Google Play, and thus OS updates become less and less necessary for getting the latest features as more and more of the OS is "relegated" to closed source, Play store updateable apps. Which obviously helps prevent fragmentation and provides a more unified experience across devices. It remains to be seen the extent to which this is effective though.

However, it does obviously go against the much talked about "openness" of Android and it's a hindrance to the various custom ROM teams trying to innovate in the Android space.

With the amount of custom roms the S3 has you can easily rectify that.

You pay 70 to go from iPod touch 16 gb to 32.

If Paranoid android doesn't bring it officially, some other dev will :) Also, it will probably run better than ever with 4.4 :P

True. After upgrading to the Galaxy S3 from my HTC Inspire I started to care less and less about doing any customization but I think it's about time I root this thing and go on the hunt for custom roms. I've heard of CM, ParanoidAndroid and PACMAN. Which do you suggest?

I would try out a few and see which one fits your taste (This is where MultiROM is a good thing, but I have no idea if it's supported on your device.)

    Personally? Paranoid Android.

I'll be snagging one of these come tax return season. I've been rocking this Mytouch 4G, which just happens to be one of the shittiest phones I've owned.

I just hope that the battery will last 2 years, since it's non-freaking-removable.

When is the last time you have used an android device? Apps are no longer aloud to auto update and must be update either through the play store or a 3rd party store.

Well, it wasn't PA that did it first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508401

Last time? A few minutes ago. If you read my comment, I quite clearly said "Google apps get updated via Google Play"; not sure what part of that you mistook for "auto update independently of Google Play".

I thought you meant google apps only. As in apps made just by google. I was pointing out all android app now require to be updating through the play store or equivalent app store, not just ones by google. Google partially did this because there were shady auto-updates adding spyware by even big name companies, *EA cough cough*.

I literally have no idea what you're on about. I was making the point that Google Apps are updated via Google Play, unlike AOSP apps, which are only updated in OS updates. You are talking something about EA, which is 100% irrelevant to an OS update discussion.

I never got what this means. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. It's not named Nexus or anything, and I haven't actually ever heard of a Nexus version of Galaxy S4 (or S3 or S2 for that matter).
But does this mean that I'll be forever stuck on 4.2.1 which I have now? :/ Seems kinda worthless to never be able to upgrade (without rooting)

Apps used to update on their dam own! Do you know what, I'm just gonna hit the ignore button. You are clearly a noob to android's history. Or trolling

On the off chance you haven't ignored yet (or for anyone else who shares this opinion), I'd like to clear this up; I know full well that apps used to be allowed to update themselves (although very few ever did, most left it to the Play Store to do it anyway), but that is not relevant to this discussion. I was pointing out the changes in this update are a continuation of the trend whereby AOSP apps are replaced by closed source Google equivalents, and the closed source Google equivalents are in the Play Store, so receive updates independently of OS updates, whereas the AOSP apps are not in Play Store so do not get updates without an OS update.

Third party apps are irrelevant to the discussion at hand, and you brought them up, not me. I am well aware of the history of Android (followed it pretty carefully since day 1 of Android's release), and I am certainly not a troll.

    https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4?id=samsung_galaxy_s4&hl=en

    Its called the google edition
It runs google aosp instead of samsung touchwiz
Good thing it gets all the newest updates from google without having to wait for samsung and or the carrier
Bad thing is you lose alot of the special touchwiz features that it had over aosp, and you cannot get it subsidized

You're phone will not be stuck on 4.2.1 forever, I believe you have the international edition of the s4, so you just have to wait for samsung to push the update, but reading online 4.3 is already out for the s4

Yeah, I have the international edition I suppose. 4.3 is out in some countries, Sweden not included. We still have to wait. :/ Feels really bad, honestly.

It's pretty easy actually, in most cases anyway. The point is: pricing like that is almost a scam.
