I want an RPG that makes me think during battles, instead of just pressing A and finishing off the bosses in a few hits.

I would go with a good SRPG like Disgaea DS. That game is so deep its insane.

Go for Final Fantasy 12 Revenant Wings too.
Might seem slow paced and easy at first, but once you reach the later chapters, you need to really know what you are doing and select spells and targets fast like hell just to survive the enemy mobs, especially at the optional parts.
One of the most challenging RPGs i played on DS, besides FF4 and the Etrian Odisseys.

I'm going to go out on a limb and pick an out there choice: My World My Way.

You get a fourth wall breaking story that deconstructs RPGs, you can literally change the course of the game by pouting, you have a silly putty fighting companion who can mimic your enemies, and lots of magic and such.

Disgaea is pretty strategical.

And Valkyrie profile. Damn that game is unbelievably hard, especially without sacrificing any of ur allies (which is required to get the best ending), and I always strive for the best.

My World My Way, I did not like this one at all.

The dark spire is very hard and is a good gam, but you better want something hard and unforgiving if you get it, because that is what it is.

The etrian games are both good, and both are tough. Luminour arc is another good one, both are turn based and have lots of voice acting.

Anyhow I think etrian oddysey and the dark spire, and maybe ff4(I don't remember it being that hard) are the harder thinking rpgs on the DS.

I've already played FF4, and for Etrian Odyssey, I tried it, but I didn't really find it appealing at first. Does it get better?

Why don't you try some SRPGs, as that's what they're all about, strategy.

I reccomend:

-Valkyrie Chronicles
-Disgaea (it might seem easy at first glance, but some levels are hard, especially if you don't grind atleast a little, or so I've noticed)
-Fire Emblem

There are more, I just have yet to play them.
