AlphaDream, developer of the Mario & Luigi RPG series, has filed for bankruptcy

The end may be nigh for Mario & Luigi RPG series developer AlphaDream. After developing titles like Superstar Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, and other Mario & Luigi RPG titles, the studio has filed for bankruptcy. According to a Japanese article via Yahoo! Japan, the filing was due to the company having an unpayable debt of 465 million yen, or $4.3 million USD. Despite cult status of the original Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga entry, further entries only began to slow down, in terms of sales, with industry insiders reportedly claiming that the latest game, a Nintendo 3DS remake of Bowser's Inside Story had sold so poorly, that it had caused Nintendo to halt further plans to develop titles on the aging platform.

I reckon some new company is promptly going to spring up that's going to comprise most of the former developers.

Then again, while Bowser's Inside Story was a great game, Dream Team felt like a tiresome slog, and Paper Jam didn't seem to get great reviews either.

I was really hoping to pick up 3DS Superstar Saga for cheap, but it doesn't seem like it was available in stores for very long. (Then again, the same could be said of Warioware Gold and Captain Toad.)

I'm really curious to see what plans for the 3DS they had to cancel because of BIS's failure. That title would've been amazing on the Switch but I guess developing on a 3DS with an existing engine costs less than building a new HD engine for the Switch.

Paper Mario is not the Mario & Luigi series, these guys never worked on Paper Mario. Their last two releases were 3DS remakes that sold pretty bad.

Not sure how to feel about these. I recently "discovered" Superstar saga on an android emulator. For an RPG it's pretty decent. But in the end, I can't deny that RPG's just aren't my genre. Let alone worthwhile enough to buy them. Still sucks, of course. :(

This is what happens when people pirate great games
I would've felt really heartbroken if I shared your opinion on the quality (and it would have been rightly so). But to me, it simply wasn't my cup of tea. I never would have bought the game to begin with.

If the reason that paper mario became not as story based is because they had 2 mario rpgs , and now there could be no more mario and luigi games, then what excuse does Nintendo have now? Also rip alphadream

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam was also developed by AlphaDream.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_&_Luigi:_Paper_Jam

(It is much more an M&L game than it is a Paper Mario game.)

its literally a mario & luigi game, check some gameplays or play the game

I could still always use my old android phone as a mp3 player but I get lost in the music and miss calls that way

It's been discontinued but you can find em second hand. It's the FiiO model K1.
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@SylverReZ nice. I've been using my BTR5 pretty much daily, got it in late 2020. Mostly use it as a desktop DAC though and the battery has already swelled up in it once, so I had to replace it. Some day I gotta grab a proper desktop DAC that doesn't have a battery lol

@K3Nv3, Yeah, cheap and nasty earbuds don't deliver the best mids, they end up sounding really muddy.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Sicklyboy, I got mine around 2022 (iirc) and it was brand new, never opened, and for £15 too compared to paying nearly £30 elsewhere.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Sicklyboy, That sucks when the battery already begins to swell up. You considering on a desktop replacement, and if so, which one?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@SylverReZ damn 15 is shockingly cheap for that. Even 30 feels like a good price just given what a bunch of other FiiO stuff costs. Granted, not familiar with what those were originally selling for, so who knows lol

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
As far as a replacement for my BTR5, I don't really have my eyes set on anything specific yet but it'll likely be from either Fiio or Schiit Audio.

@Sicklyboy, Originally when it came out, they sold for around $40 USD according to FiiO's news bulletin. https://www.fiio.com/newsinfo/54677.html

@Sicklyboy, I would prefer FiiO as the better brand for a USB DAC.

I feel like headphones reached a peak even ones from ten years ago sound better than new ones
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@K3Nv3, all depends how much money you wanna spend. I had skullcandy headphones and shit way back when but I never liked anything as much as the headphones (and earbuds) I use nowadays

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@SylverReZ yeah fwiw I've been quite happy with my FiiO BTR5 so I don't have any specific reason to not a FiiO again. Just gotta see what's available and how much I'm trying to spend lol

I have the FiiO X1-ii, and love what it does, but the battery life is kinda ass and the sluggish, unresponsive menu makes me regret my purchase a little.

(not the wii u version, specifically the switch version)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Frankly not. That's like a 'cheat engine' for BoTW, right?
