Hacking Airplane mode and disable internet to avoid updates is unnecesary

But airplane mode is disabled automatically when you put it in the dock, and of course you forget about those things...
You may also forget to disable Wi-Fi or set up the DNS.

Alternatively, open the console and rip away the Wi-Fi antenna.

entering docked mode removes airplane mode? It's completely logical but wow, I had no idea.

It doesn't, though. If you turn on airplane mode and put the Switch in the dock, it stays active. More precisely, the system lets you use wireless controllers over Bluetooth while docked and in airplane mode (which is different from handheld, where airplane turns off Bluetooth), but wi-fi stays off.

You'll have nothing to worry about. I've put my console in airplane mode once since 5.0 dropped and I take the thing in and out of the dock every day.

You can actually control what airplane mode turns off. Though turning wifi off in airplane mode means no local play either with other systems as that uses wifi direct. But with airplane mode you can still have Bluetooth in handheld/tabletop mode
