My Ipod touch 16gb 2G has gone through the washing machine
does anyone know if putting it in a bag of rice for a week actually fixes it

My Palm Treo has been dropped in a high-chlorine swimming pool and survived. Generally if it's non-salty water the device will survive.

Put it in a bag of rice, alcohol got into my iPod 2G(Long story, not drinking alcohol) and I put it in a bag of rice for a day and it was all better, just some brighter spots on the screen near the status bar, but it's better than having a bunch of alcohol bubbles around the screen...

Try putting it in a bag of rice, it won't damage it anymore than it is right now.

Alcohol (rubbing I presume?) evaporates hella fast on its own.

But you do speak the truth, the rice can't possibly damage it more.

My friend fixed his ipod by putting it in a bag of rice but this was from minor water damage, no harm in trying

Whatever you do: DON'T SEND IT TO APPLE. I sent my 5th gen iPod Nano after it wouldn't turn on (a week after buying it, mind you) and they say it had WATER in the headphone jack. I never went anywhere near water with that thing, and they never returned it. Those bastards...

Instead of rice, you could also try finding those packets of desiccant around the house, like in medicine or food containers. I expect those to work better since they're designed to absorb moisture. Be careful though, since it's usually toxic.
