i have bootmii boot2 and ios and forwarders for most the homebrew apps that i use. iirc homebrew channel can browse the usb port? what could potentially go wrong that would require an sd card to repair, or be caused by lack of an sd card? thanks.

Most of the old apps don't run from USB, plus some don't support certain partition setups.
Try moving only the USB-central ones to the USB drive, like USB loaders, WiiMC, WiiXplorer, etc. (I also moved ScummVM to USB.)

wiimc, cfg usb loader and wiixplorer are pretty much all i use. i think MMM can read the usb drive as well, and the changelog for priiloader says it checks usb if sd is not present. i know bootmii can't read/write nand dumps from/to a usb device, but i keep my nand dump on a separate drive anyways incase my wii usb drive craps out.

the only downside i can think of is that i swap out hard drives sometimes when my cousins come over as they have different games than me, so they'd also have to have their programs stores on usb://apps/.
