It appears that after a four year legal struggle, ZeniMax, parent company of Bethesda Studios, and Facebook have come to an agreement over copyright issues regarding the Oculus Rift. ZeniMax sued Oculus VR back in 2014, as they believed that the two founders of Oculus had stolen trade secrets from id Software, another subsidiary of ZeniMax. John Carmack, who had still been working at id Software at the time went on to become the co-founder of Oculus and developed the virtual reality technology behind the headset, which ZeniMax claimed Carmack had used code and trademarked information from id/ZeniMax in order to create the Oculus. When Facebook had purchased Oculus shortly after the lawsuit had begun, they were then in charge of dealing with the legal fallout, which has continued until December 12, 2018, where both businesses have made a settlement outside of court.

In 2017, a trial began officially in Texas, with a jury deciding to award ZeniMax $500 million dollars for damages (with the company originally seeking to win $2 billion from Facebook), however the court's judge overturned the ruling and lowered the amount to $250 million. ZeniMax had been in the process of appealing that decision, but that has ended due to a settlement being reached. The results of the agreement were not disclosed, but ZeniMax's CEO stated, "We are pleased that a settlement has been reached and are fully satisfied by the outcome." On the Facebook side of things, a PR spokesperson simply said that the company was happy to put the issue behind them and move on.

I wonder, have they been working on anything all this time or did they halt all progress in case they had to shut it down anyway?
I would have expected at least some news of a new model by now. They'll have to play catch-up with Windows Mixed Reality headsets if they want to stay in business. The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ is looking really good.

It's funny how these corporations act like they did the work when it was John, and in reality, John's work! Though the business/slave world does not see it as such, thus him and all his work is their property, then he is free once his contract is up. Bunch crap, kill artistic vision.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Oculus Go. The VR headset no one wanted. I expect the Quest is just going to be more of the same. They really need to stop focusing so much on trying to fit all the horsepower in the headset, the technology isn't there yet, and it's going to hold them back from providing good VR.

Hundreds of millions of dollars and they come up with the name ZeniMax? They seriously should consider something more appealing and cool sounding -.-

So... I guess now, if not already, they are going to change the code?

Just because you do not want it does not mean no one wanted it. I have a dk1 dk2 cv1 Samsung Odyssey, and a go. I use the go the most.

It does nothing that you can't do with the smartphone you already have (if it's a decent one) and a cheap VR headset that works with it though. And self-contained VR headsets will always have that limitation.
I have a DK2 and a Gear VR and I use the Gear VR more, but I don't think that says much. I'm simply waiting for proper VR to get good enough before investing in the hardware needed to use it. While I'm waiting for that, I can have fun with the Gear VR.
That seems like it's now happening with the Odyssey+, but the hardware to run it is still a bit too pricy for my liking. Not planning on upgrading my GTX 970 just yet.
I like VR, but the narrow field of view and the low DPI are distracting and detract from the experience, so I don't feel like I'm able to immerse myself fully and get completely lost in it. The 3K resolution on the Odyssey+, while I haven't tried it, I would say is a bare minimum for a really immersive VR experience judging by what I've used of VR so far. FOV is still awful though.
There's also the fact that games are still a bit lacking, and likely will be until VR becomes more mainstream, so I don't really feel a need to spring into PC VR just yet.

Thats why they are doing the quest they know most people do not have a PC to run higher end systems so if they want to be more main stream they need to be easier to get into.
