Gaming Advice for 5.50 fw

So being the chump I am to PSP modding, I blindly followed a guide and managed to get 5.50 MHU installed.

But just taking a look at the threads here, I see that most people are using GEN-x type firmware... So from what I understand, the GEN stuff is still being updated and would be better for running new games? Since I'm only interested in mostly the old stuff, I should still be good no matter which I choose?

Also: if I wanted to switch to GEN, do I have to flash my psp again with the pandora battery/mms back to 5.00-m33 and update from there?

I believe that just running the 5.50 GEN D3 updater should allow you to reflash your PSP assuming MHU hasn't done anything wacky to fool the XGEN updater into thinking you PSP's on a higher version.

I have a very similar question, say I wanted to go from 5.50 GEN to 5.0 M33. What would I need to do? I read something aboth hellcat's recovery, but I'm not sure about it. Is a Pandora needed?
