Hacking Action replay on gc backups

Hi, i know this has probably been asked before but, How do i use action replay with my GC backups?

I own an original AR from my GC days, but a lot of my original discs are scratched from the kids using them.
I have tried a few methods a while ago now to get it working but had no joy. Is it even possible?

a backup of my non-functioning GC action replay works on my GC backups(my original AR is to scratched).
i think you have to use a lower version MIOS.wad when installing the cMIOS so it will work as newer MIOS versions block the action replay.
