The practice started pre-DMCA, and even now there are exceptions to the DMCA that do make personal dumps legal, just not in all cases. I'd assume other countries have similar exceptions. In the US, the 3DS wouldn't fall into that category, but many systems do.

If softbrick happens, boot into recovery mode and update back to 10.7 and try again. (Look up 3ds recovery mode on google)I'm having a hard time understanding all the jargon all over the place.

Was previously on 9.5 after just buying the system, preparing to downgrade to 9.2 and then this happens.

Ordered OOT (nintendo select re-release) along with datel power saves
Prepping files for the downgrade until they get here on Thursday.

So far I got CFW working, and now I'm making backups of emunand and sysnand to prepare to downgrade to 2.1 for arm9loaderhax
So far so good, no errors, everything is going smoothly.

Well, I switched SD cards somewhere about 50% of the way through, so I had to redo like 99% of what I had already done.
Then I bricked my emunand, so redid everything again.
NOW I'm about to flash 2.1 onto my emunand after this backup to copy to my sysnand...
7 hours later.

I'm confused, Plailect's guide has a9lh booting into a cfw sysnand? I thought the whole point was to always use emunand to *not* screw something up?
A backup of a game would be a save file. Are you talking about a .cia/.3ds, that is a game that was dumped in a format that allows playing on the 3ds? Sorry if the jargon's confusing, but you're a little confused on some terminology, but that's fine
You can install and play .cia files when you downgrade to 9.2 other than that you can't get into cfw (Rx"tools").
