Im considering purchasing an ac powered usb hub to plug my usb into instead of directly into the wii. being that the hub is ac powered would that help with the loading time in some games?

I won't affect the HD performance, but rather stability... I have a so-so 2.5" enclosure where sometimes the Wii won't recognize the HD. I plugged the usb-power cable in a powered usb hub (and the data usb cable into the Wii, obviously) and never had a HD not recognized error since then...

But in short, no it will not improve hard disk performance.

On the contrary, if you have long runs of USB (+12ft), it should help with intermittent issues like interference(which does affect performance, to a degree).

Does the Wii (both retail and homebrew software) co-operate well with hubs? It would be kind of convenient to get one at this point, especially if I get a Wiispeak unit eventually.
