even if the upgrade would have damaged Windows installation, data could have been recovered anyway, as long as doesn't accidentally damage it.

i like how i am only one of like two windows 8.1 users on this site

Stock 8.1?

W8.x always felt like a missed opportunity for MS. With a couple of tweaks/patches e.g. Classic Shell, I found it fine to use.

Stock 8.1 though I hate, especially the way they handled the start menu.

the upgrade is already available on windows 10? I thought it was coming in December. Or am I totally mistaken and this is not the free upgrade

It’s already released and rolling out slowly. The upgrade was free. I didn’t make a back up before it did it. I just let my seven year old click the button.
