I feel like that the fear of bricking is being unreasonably magnified. I've got my n3DS last week and I absolutely didn't know ANYTHING about the system, the only research I had done beforehand was to check if there was a specific firmware version I had to get and, look for a guide that instructed me on the steps to follow.
20 minutes after having gotten my 3ds, I started to follow plailect guide and apart from a 2 hours hiccup in which I tried over and over (and consumed my index finger in the process) to get sysupdater to work, the rest went smoothly. Slow, due to how long nand backup takes but smooth. If you follow a GOOD guide and take the time to double or hell, even triple check what you're doing, the risk is minimal. I didn't even know of this place a week ago and if I had, after reading all the people that discourage a9lh on here, I would have been more than a little hesitant to install it, if not skipping it altogether.
The risk is there no question about it, but more often than not the first cause of bricking is located between the 3ds and the chair. Again, I am about as green as you can get when it comes to 3ds stuff and half of the terms used in this forums still go over my head yet, by following a well structured guide I managed it. With the recent Aurora a9lh tool, things should be even easier.
