If you manually patched TWL_FIRM or AGB_FIRM you'll need to restore those to stock before updating

What CFW and version are you using?
Luma3DS 6.1.2 - 934c4bed (According to StarUpdater)
Does it give an error number?
No, it's a System Settings-style dialogue, not a typical grey error dialogue. It's just the message, with an OK button.
Do you have another 3DS you can try to see if that one works?
No.
connect to another access point, just to be sure.
I don't have another access point.

Ok one other question, does the error come up immediately? Or does it start downloading the update then show the error? Or does it seem to complete the download and then error? Could you try another SD card in case it's bad or doesn't have space to download the update?

The error comes up about 5 seconds after starting the update. The progress bar stays clear, then suddenly jumps about 5 pixels forward, then the message pops up.
I have several gigabytes of free space on the microSD, and it's working perfectly.

Are you on latest Luma? Could you test your SD card or try with another just in case?
