Your logic is atrocious. You do realize by adding a blu-ray drive, it would reduce battery life even further? Portability be damned.

It's cool that cartridges of that size will exist for the system, but it is true that realistically 3rd parties will stick to fully digital and the awkward physical + digital releases due to how much more costly these cartridges are for the developer. As someone who prefers all digital for the most part anymore so I always have full access of my games and don't have to swap anything out, its not a big deal to me one way or the other, but I'm sure this news probably disappoints some people, so for them, I sympathize.

I don't really see the problem, guys. There is currently no game larger than 32 gb available, and even then some devs are forcing people to download part of the game. Won't that just happen again if 64gb becomes available?

The comparison to the n64 vs psx days that is being made is weird to say the least. Back then cd's held ten to twenty times the storage capacity, but there are examples that show that devs barely knew what to do with all that space. Now the gap is.. What? Half the size? But it takes some searching to even find games that would use it in the first place (as said: gta v could just lower resolutions a little).

And like with the cd, People seem to forget that sony co-owns the right to bluerays. I mean... You can call ninty paranoid, but i'd be wary as well if i had to rely on my direct rival to provide me the product i would need to succeed.

This is contrary to this discussion considering we're talking about game cartridges, not SD cards and digital libraries. There are 1TB cards available already too, albeit scarce and grossly overpriced. My statement was towards the fact not many games reach the 32GB limit of cards right now anyway.

Going by this list there is absolutely no rush to get 64gb carts out there. No one is even up to using 32gb.

FNAC and Worten, both stores who still sell a copy of Mario Kart DS for 49.99 how reliable.

What costs we talking about ? I bought a brand 64GB micro SD card for 10€ back in 2016. Also bought a brand SSD with 256GB for 60€.
I know priced did increase a little in 2017 because they put most flash RAM in useless mobile phones no one buys.

Anyway Nintendo will order a huge amount that will leave them with adiitional discounts.

I still think Nintendo will pay less then 10€ for a 64GB cartridge.

This is really a no brainer and i really see no reason for Nintendo to hold back untill 2019.

On a side note i did check on amazon.de and the downlodcode cost 10€ more then the cart............

I'd quite like a large external usb hard drive you connect to the dock that holds your games, and a single reusable proprietary cart 64GB+ that you can transfer games to for portability.
Basically the user purchases these as a one off expansion.
Maybe we'll see the return of something similar to the 64DD. Or a simple external HD for home use only.

For those that keep comparing SD and MicroSD cards to the cartridge medium the switch uses in relation to their prices you should note that the memory technologies used are not the same so therefore you are comparing apples to carrots. Just because in your mind memory is memory does not mean all storage mediums are the same and therefore we can't expect them to cost the same to manufacture

those are the only comon stores you can find videogames out of the very rare dedicated stores, most of them went bankrupt and closed so basicaly unless you live on a major city your not gonna find any dedicated videogames stores anymore and even on big citys its very hard to find.

my point still stands new ps4 games usualy cost 70 and new switch games cost 60 only BOTW was 70 euros at launch now its like 64 or so.

the only major difference is the shape of the card. same goes for the nds and 3ds game cards. What people fail to take into account though is the speed class of the storage. Nintendo could let them use aslower class for the 64gb cards to even out the price. however then there would be longer load times, possible framerate issues and even load failure crashes. these are 3 things alone are probably the reason nintendo is waiting to let devs use the 64gb cards. they rather wait for the 64gb high speed storage to drop in price then risk using slower cards. It is a smart move. I expect 64gb or 128 on board storage switches to be released around 2019 too.

Burning onto Bluray disks costs way less than a Euro, so even if Nintendo get 64GB carts for around 10 Euros, they are still much more expensive than burning onto a disk.

From what I've seen this seems reflected in the current pricing of switch games, where the difference is usually less than £10.00. I think Fifa 2018 had a difference of £6.00 at launch compared to other consoles.

The logic of the internet never fails to bemuse me.

We have the Switch; a handheld console, with a screen, that runs off battery, that is portable. Ofc it runs off cartridges, every handheld ever has run off cartridges but one, and that used propriety UMD's and we all know how well they went down.

Now look at cartridges from other handheld devices, do they even reach 16gig, or even 8!

The fact that Switch could even have 64gig game cartridges, larger even than the blu-ray is frankly amazing, just like the 32gig cartridges it has currently. And yet still people deride it.

At no point ever was the size of Vita or 3DS cartridges even spoke about, yet now Switch has to justify it's carts, irrelevant to it's nearest comparisons, simply because a gaming press like to incite fan-boy flame fights.

Switch is a massive jump forward in every respect for a handheld, battery powered, screen console. The fact it even ran Doom at all, the nearest comparison would be Vita's Borderlands 2 and that was terrible, not to mention years of work.

You can't have a blu-ray drive and a hardrive in a handheld console, end of.
You choose between a portable or a dedicated console.
Sony and Microsoft went for dedicated.
Nintendo went for portable, it's hardly surprsing since they started in handheld game&watch and gameboy/DS have sold millions upon millions.

People act like Nintendo should have some sort of magic wand that can cram a blu-ray player, hard drive, massive gpu, a coolant system and psu able to cope into some handheld device. If it were possible Sony and Microsoft would be doing it too.

that is not the issue of the bluray drive but it would be impossible, there is no way a portable console could carry a bluray reader and be portable... portable blurays would just destroy the console if people moved it around much wich people do since its a portable console.

It makes me rage that they can't spend a few more cents on the 64GB carts. I shouldn't have to download the second half of my game before playing it, this is ridiculous.
