A look into the 3DS's physical design.
Why does it have multiple "layers"?

The 3DS is not flush or uniform in coloring across its lower layers, Nintendo's Yui Ehara (of the Research & Engineering department) explains why. The middle layer is recessed and the top layer is tapered in order to make the system easier to open without having to add a finger hold. In addition the middle layer is where the main side switches are located, being recessed means it's less likely for a button or switch to be pressed by mistake.

Some people will be happy to note that the 3DS slider pad was indeed changed after the showing at E3, multiple times. The final is designed to be rubbery so that players can keep a better grip on it.

    Makes sense.
I always wondered why the top layer was the largest out of all of them and this explains everything.
    Thanks!

I thought it was just part of the whole "not final design" aspect when it was originally shown off, the colors made it look like it wasn't even made from a single shell set.

That's stupid. This is not how a well designed device should look like.

You forgot to actually make a counter-point to explain what a well-designed device would look like. All you have right now is nothing.

Maybe not well designed, but certainly well engineered.

    Agreed!
Don't let the design of the system throw you off. It's all about what it does.

I'm basicly sayin that there is a lot of room for design improvements. Compare the differences between NDS phat and NDS lite. Maybe Nintendo designed the 3DS so bad on purpose to get the chance to make a better designed device in a year or so (3DS lite?).

I don't think the design is bad, vastly better than original DS phat. It serves a functional purpose and is built from a tough resin and shaped to prevent breakage, as explained in the Iwata Asks segment.

It funny that a game stop had this color on a pic and it not a launch color. [IMG]

idk It isn't bad, but wouldn't it look better if the top color was for all layers? [IMG]

I don't want to sound miserable here or put a downer on the 3DS or anything... I'm certainly not a hater either, the 3DS seems great... but it's one of the ugliest handhelds I've ever personally seen.

I noticed that too, and wondered why no one ever mentioned it.

The main reason why I'm not getting the aqua blue 3DS is because the very bottom is such an ugly blue (It's almost like the DSi's launch blue).

The layers makes it easier to take apart the handheld too. Lol.

3DS the ugliest? What about the Grey Nintendo DS launched in 2005!

Look at it! The top and bottom half were uneven as f*ck and that design choice didn't even had a real purpose. In fact, it made opening the handheld even harder :/
Stop complaining and just wait for a revision of the 3DS

Haha nah, the original DS design I kind of liked... not really sure why but it definitely has something IMO.
    This thing is just wrong.

Not sure why people are complaining when you won't be looking at the device that way for any real reason.

I rather like it. I'd hate to have all my nintendo devices looking exactly the same.

it kinda puts a new meaning to 3ds ie. 3 layers of the DS
for me at the moment, i dont even have to use a finger to open the ds (hinge broke completely)... and whats the slider pad? is it the analog stick? or the d-pad? or the 3ds slider? or the volume control? or is it the 3ds outer case?
