That's only true if you ignore the entire deliberate bricking scandal from a few years ago.

the r4 pro gold 2020 is my favorite, but honestly none of them hold up to a modded DSi and run Twilight, theres no comparison

Sky 3ds is the only one that works without issues with pokemon sun/moon and ultrasun/ultramoon, if you don't have any interest in these games, just pick a stargate 3ds card

The risk with Gateway is that it can wipe your exploit. I forget how.

The soft hack is a decent way to do it. It's not perfect because you have to transfer files to the internal microSD card, and it takes AGES to install them, and often the files don't work, but once it's done it's done. Gateway was far more convenient, but there was some big reason why it wasn't really viable anymore after support stopped. It might have been that newer games didn't work or it might have been something related to emulators. My old posts probably have relevant info.

If I remember right one of the Sky cards was still a good solution last year, but they are expensive.

All of them I think. Gateway can be booted into some kind of high-privilege mode and I think it might be that if you load a recent Nintendo firmware in that mode, the Nintendo firmware has sufficient privileges to overwrite your bootloader. Something like that.
