Hi all, i'm new here
smile.gif

First of all, I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong forum section but it seemed the most appropriate section to me. Also, I've only just received my very first DSi a few days ago and haven't had any experience in hacking or modding it. So I apologize in advance if my questions will result in multiple face-palms or what not, please bare with me >_

1. http://gbatemp.net/t217593-the-which-flash...get-info-thread
You can start here, it covers whats considered good among other things. Then you can go into the subsections and find what you need specifically for that flashcart. None of the sites listed are random, if you want a local source your probably screwed if thats the only one you know.

2. Custom firmware is no longer needed on a DS, everything is self-contained on a flashcart. The DSi encryption is not broken yet.

3. no. Encryption for DS was broken, that is why there is no need for custom firmware. The flashcart handles all that. You only need to load a flashcart with whatever homebrew or rom you want with the flashcart system files.

4. slot1 is for flashcarts listed in 1. slot2 is for GBA games or GBA flashcarts or NDS addon like rumble or RAM pack for browsing. or slot2 specific gba flashcarts only like the 3in1.

5. Irrellavent question, it doesn't apply. You deal with some games with AP (Anti Piracy code) instead. Like the new Michael Jackson game, you can google "nds michael jackson game ap" for an example or here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=267738

thanks so much for the reply!!

Ya i've read the stickied topic already (great guide btw) but not sure how up to date that is (I know there's the edited time shown at the end of the first post) but from my research, I've found SOOO many different ones out there, things like the N5 (which I can't find in the list of that topic) or the iTouch2, so MANY different variations.........I was hoping for a more general opinion from many people so I can base my decision on this. The main thing I care about is reliability, such as constant updates from the development team, good community support and whether the flash cart will last long or not and not break/brick easily.

By "random" sites, I just mean any site that people suggest. As I said, I live in New Zealand so ordering from a website (regardless of how trustworthy it is) just doesn't work for me since the shipping fee and the other costs will be more expensive for me, whereas it's much better if I buy it locally using Trademe, which is a website specially created for New Zealanders.

Anyway I can only find DSTT and N5 on Trademe, I'm not sure which one is better though as it's not listed in the guide therefore I can't do a comparison, which is why I asked for help
smile.gif

BTW what does RTG mean? It's mentioned somewhere in the guide.

About the rumble pack thing, what is it? And does the RAM pack simply add more RAM to the DS? I did a quick search and apparently that's what it does, first time I've heard you can actually add physical upgrades to a portable gaming console lol....

Ya i've heard news about the vuvuzela noises in the new Michael Jackson game, pretty funny for Ubisoft to do this lol.

Lastly, I still need to clarify on whether u can still use features from the official firmware like you would normally on a normal DS. E.g., using wifi, browsers etc........and whether there's still a specific firmware I can only update to so that it doesn't break the flash cart exploit. I assume different types allow different versions of firmware, depending on how up to date they are?

The SupercardDStwo is the most reliable.
It cost about $35
It can play DS GBA SNES NES Games and Normal Format Movies.
When there was a firmware released on the DSi (1.4.1) Afew hours later Supercard released a fix.
Oh and firmwares don't change ANYTHING except for blocking compatibility with flashcards.
But Most cards can bypass that and create updates to get through the block so you don't have to worry.

Here's my thought on the top 3:

1. Supercard
Plays NDS GBA NES SNES Games and Normal Format Movies
Most reliable makers.
LOT of features
Bypass ANY Anti-Piracy
$35

2. Acekard2i
Plays NDS and Special Format Movies
Alot of features
Bypass Most AP
Power Saving
$13

3. Original R4
Play NDS and Special Format Movies
Updated alot with Wood
VERY GOOD PRICE
Simple
$3

The stickies are up to date, some of us here are nortorious for knowing everything relavent for a specific topic.

Mostly avoid clones.

This should explain about the rumble pack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumble_Pak
This is what rumble pack looks like: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=46636

The RAM pack was used for the browser that ran on the DS. On the DSi it was included as part of the system.

This is the most common addon everyone currently uses is the 3in1.
http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/3_in_1_Expans..._for_EZ-Flash_V

This is the list of good vendors: http://gbatemp.net/t33039-gbatemp-s-offici...ashcart-dealers
This is the list of bad vendors: http://gbatemp.net/t169327-list-of-flashca...om-updated-2009

Most sites listed will send via the post, that means you get free or nearly free if you want it registered or not (registered means you can track the package). Anything faster requires you to pay more for.

Most acronyms are defined for you in the guide itself.

The DS doesn't use an upgradable firmware. That is why it uses encryption instead. All AP are specific to a game, if it has any in the first place. What features, it is pretty basic, you run a game.
The DSi uses an upgradeable firmware but still uses encryption for use with DS games.

If you want a system review, go here: http://gbatemp.net/d8-gbatemp-review-portal
List form of all the reviews here: http://gbatemp.net/f99-official-gbatemp-reviews
Or you can read the user reviews.

Yeah...
The first sticky linkedQ: Should I wait for the DSTwo?
A: Sure, but only if you're willing to pay the $35-$40 price tag. The features for NDS game playing are great, and the GBA emulator does work. However a lot of other features that were anticipated haven't been included yet (SNES emulator, DIVX playback, etc.).
lolwut?

O.P.
N5 is a clone, I wouldn't recommend it as:
1. It's a clone
2. It doesn't support SDHC
Though it does support Wood...

DSTT is okay, though it relies on updates from the community

I would recommend the SCDS2 as it has 99.9% compatability, there may be a crappy shovelware out there that doesn't work but for the most part it's fine. It also supports GBA and SNES emulation along with DIVX video playback

tl;dr
Get the SCDS2

great, thanks a lot guys!

I think I might go with the AceKard 2i, it seems to be my only good option.........the SuperCard DS2 seems really nice, the official website is a lot more professional than other sites I've seen, but it's too expensive for me. It doesn't sell it in New Zealand but Australia (neighbour country right next to NZ) and it's like $100, and that's only in AUD so it's gonna cost more if converted to NZD.

And it seems the DSTT I found is fake, see here:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=338318156

I checked on DSTT's official website where there's a section on ANTI-FAKE.

The Ak2i is a good choice, but actually, Aussie DS2s do NOT cost $100. Try BambooGaming.
