You can start here, it covers whats considered good among other things. Then you can go into the subsections and find what you need specifically for that flashcart. None of the sites listed are random, if you want a local source your probably screwed if thats the only one you know.
2. Custom firmware is no longer needed on a DS, everything is self-contained on a flashcart. The DSi encryption is not broken yet.
3. no. Encryption for DS was broken, that is why there is no need for custom firmware. The flashcart handles all that. You only need to load a flashcart with whatever homebrew or rom you want with the flashcart system files.
4. slot1 is for flashcarts listed in 1. slot2 is for GBA games or GBA flashcarts or NDS addon like rumble or RAM pack for browsing. or slot2 specific gba flashcarts only like the 3in1.
5. Irrellavent question, it doesn't apply. You deal with some games with AP (Anti Piracy code) instead. Like the new Michael Jackson game, you can google "nds michael jackson game ap" for an example or here:

thanks so much for the reply!!
Ya i've read the stickied topic already (great guide btw) but not sure how up to date that is (I know there's the edited time shown at the end of the first post) but from my research, I've found SOOO many different ones out there, things like the N5 (which I can't find in the list of that topic) or the iTouch2, so MANY different variations.........I was hoping for a more general opinion from many people so I can base my decision on this. The main thing I care about is reliability, such as constant updates from the development team, good community support and whether the flash cart will last long or not and not break/brick easily.
By "random" sites, I just mean any site that people suggest. As I said, I live in New Zealand so ordering from a website (regardless of how trustworthy it is) just doesn't work for me since the shipping fee and the other costs will be more expensive for me, whereas it's much better if I buy it locally using Trademe, which is a website specially created for New Zealanders.
Anyway I can only find DSTT and N5 on Trademe, I'm not sure which one is better though as it's not listed in the guide therefore I can't do a comparison, which is why I asked for help
BTW what does RTG mean? It's mentioned somewhere in the guide.
About the rumble pack thing, what is it? And does the RAM pack simply add more RAM to the DS? I did a quick search and apparently that's what it does, first time I've heard you can actually add physical upgrades to a portable gaming console lol....
Ya i've heard news about the vuvuzela noises in the new Michael Jackson game, pretty funny for Ubisoft to do this lol.
Lastly, I still need to clarify on whether u can still use features from the official firmware like you would normally on a normal DS. E.g., using wifi, browsers etc........and whether there's still a specific firmware I can only update to so that it doesn't break the flash cart exploit. I assume different types allow different versions of firmware, depending on how up to date they are?
