I just recently revived an old broken 3ds (non-new 3ds), and discovered its on 7.1.0-16U firmware. I realize firmware is all the way up to 11.7.0-40U.

Is it safe to upgrade to latest firmware? I realize you can still do hacks, but i was curious if there is anything I can/cannot do between the two firmwares? I tried reading a few faqs, but I couldnt find enough information explaining whether there was a difference or not.

Thanks.

So I can hack it first, then if i update the hacks remain intact?
Yes, the current ARM9 entrypoint du year (and probably forever) is B9S (and before that was A9LH): both stay installed when you update, as long as you're running a CFW with a kernel-partition-write-protection patch (which both Luma and Rei-Six, the two currently developed CFWs, have by default)

Yeah, i already did that, and am on cfw now. But thanks for the heads up! :)

Sorry if I wasted a thread about the firmware confusion!
Don't worry, there are a lot of of much less useful topics (usually from people that can't use decent spelling or capitalization...)
