He's their mascot. They've intentionally made it so that Mario is the first thing you think of and when you hear Mario you think of Nintendo.

I have 2 cousins, a Classmate and a friend who's a fan of some celebrity actor guy--all named Mario but whenever I hear their names you know what I say automatically and aloud--"Itsa, me Mario!" Thats what.

Thats not a bad thing exactly but I really dont think he counts.

I think that Zelda "screams" more than link does (in the eyes of social gamers). I dont know how many times i've had to correct people (in a none patronising sense) that Link is the main character in the Legend of Zelda games rather than Zelda is. If that makes any sense...

IMO, Although Zelda and Metroid are very bonded to the Nintendo name.. they're very peculiar, have more serious stories and stuff..
