    Hey everyone,
I wanted to share my opinion about PIXEL DENSITY on 3ds XL, and your input will most likely help me to decide should I buy N3DS or N3DS XL.

First of all, I used DSi XL for a longer time, and even though there were "broken" pixels with Ace Attorney and other games with a lot of text, the text was always CRYSTAL CLEAR and crisp (at least for me). Now I started to use more seriously mine 3ds xl and text on some games is just awful, there is not better way to put it. I mean the lower screen is acceptable (just that), but upper one is joke, text is blurry and shitty ( I am referring to Ace attorney:dual destinies and Monster Hunter 4, jap. version). In both games, text on the upper screen is blurry and it was the same one one more unit of 3ds XL I tried, low pixel density is just terrible thing.

Now I am thinking, will it be hard for me to adapt to OG N3DS ( even though I only used XL versions so far)? I mean the screen is even smaller then DSi XL, but I really don't like how the text looks on 3ds XL? I also mainly play games with text, so this is kinda important to me.

Bonus question: Is PSP more crispy then (N)3DS ( I am thinking of buying it also for visual novels and emulation purposes).

    Thx for your input! :discuss:

if you own a PS Vita 1000 with the OLED screen, nothing else you look at even compares to the vita.. stunning and clear. they run emulators also. i always go for the XL over smaller as i prefer the way they fit my hands.

Hm so it seems that VITA has the best screen then? Everyone were talking that console is a failure and its not hacked yet last time I checked.

Oled screens are great and the vita also has a nice red. Regarding 3ds xl screens I found them nicer than the normal ones. Not blurry at least not more than normal.

Also last I heard the vita was hacked like the wiiu. Psp backups and home brew but not vita stuff. I'm not sure what firmware you need though

Is there a thread for this? I'm kinda interested in a vita as well if I can run emulators and psp isos. Specifically the firmware requirements.

You can run, psp, ps1, snes, mega drive, all the old emulators but this is where it's important 3.18 is the furthest you can go to do this, 3.18 and below is safe and you can manually install a firmware you want, you can jump from 1.06 and go strait to 3.18... Vita current firmware is 3.35 but cannot be used for emulators yet. You will need access to a ps3 for 2 minutes also to do this hack.

Awesome. Thank you for the info. I will try to find more when and if I actually find one reasonably priced and on low enough firmware. I still have a launch psp that is in brand new condition. Lost track of the cfw for that when the main coder responsible stopped doing it. Anywho, thanks again.

if blurriness is your main concern, vita might not be your cup of tea for emulation/visual novel purposes. PSP has 480x272 resolution and Vita has 960x544 so vita upscales the psp resolution and this makes the the image a bit blurry. i both have 3ds xl and PS Vita OLED, so if you find the image of 3ds XL blurry, you will surely find the image of PS Vita blurry too. of course i am talking about PSP emulation on Vita. Vita stuff looks crystal clear as it is not upscaled and thanks to that OLED.

I can recommend PSP Go for your purpose. Its screen is smaller than other PSPs, so it has higher PPI. its LCD is crystal clear.

mech: yeah, i use gameboy micro nearly daily. i love the screen.

btw, i don't want to be misunderstood. i am perfectly happy with my 3ds XL and Vita. but even if blurriness of 3ds XL on 3DS games is a concern for the op, i can't recommend PSP emulation on Vita.

mech: buy a gba flash card (i recommend ez flash IV), this way you can play NES/GB/GBC/GBA games on it and have an ultra portable emulation device with crystal clear screen and best d-pad of Nintendo. at least that is what i do.

Ok I made some conclusions then, although I still have some doubts. And yes, blurriness is enemy number one for for me, if something is not crystal clear, that's not my cup of tea.
So VITA had the best screen, but since its not hacked, its still not usable for me ( VITA backups I mean). It has the best resolution also, apparently 4x better then PSP ( if I counted well), but PSP games are up-scaled which makes them blurry, so the buying of PSP just for PSP games seems as a logic choice.

Considering Nintendo, situation is more problematic for me, 3DS XL (upper screen which bother me pretty much) has resolution 800 x 240 and size is 4.88 inch, while DSi XL has 256 x 192 on 4.2 inch screen. But text on DSi XL looks much better, even though it has lower resolution!!! I guess this means resolution isn't everything for pixel density and clarity of the picture.

Can anyone compare VITA with OG 3DS when it comes to clarity of the text?

3DS and 3DS XL display 400 x 240 in 2d mode. in 3D mode, it is 400 x 240 per eye. so you can assume it is 400 x 240 when trying to calculate PPI or compare its resolution with another device.

you can have a look at PPI values for consoles, they will give you a general idea.

Vita has 220 ppi, psp go has 145 ppi, other psps have 128 ppi, 3DS (old) has 132, 3DS XL (old and new) has 95, DSi XL has 76 and precious gameboy micro has 144 ppi. yeah unbelievable for its time.

Vita has much clearer text than my 3DS XL. i don't have a normal 3DS, but it is probably better than that too.

of course there are lots of variables. For example some vita games do not use full resolution of vita, they are upscaled. Some fonts can be seen clear even at lower PPIs etc.

Yeah ppi value seems the most correct for comparing the clarity of the text.
Even PSP has better value then 3ds XL as it has 130 dpi.

    In any case VITA wins.
