I'm only a newbie, and I've seen tons of these threads. I am be going over common troubleshooting problems, and how you can fix them. Also, credits to Plailect, who basically wrote this, and I copied it off of the user's site... I just put it all in a post. Go to 3ds.guide if you want to hack your 3ds. Please don't follow any video tutorials, or you will get bricked.

This guide assumes you have Luma3ds. If you have other CFW, please ask in the forums or Google.

My 3ds is borked. What can I do?

Tell us if you can boot to a black screen, boot normally, or boot to a blue screen.

I'm booting to a black screen!

1. Make sure you have the correct Luma payloads. If it shows something on the screen and you recently upgraded to B9S 1.2, upgrade luma to 8.0, or if you have B9S 1.0, and luma 8.0, downgrade luma to 7.1.
If you have Luma, make sure you have boot.firm/arm9loaderhax.bin (honestly you need to upgrade) on the ROOT of your sd card.

It still doesn't work...

2. Try booting without your SD card. If it works, go on your SD card and go to this directory:

/Nintendo 3DS/(32 Character ID)/(32 Character ID)/extdata/00000000/

3. and deleting these folders (properly to your region):

  • EUR Region: Delete 00000098
  • JPN Region: Delete 00000082
  • USA Region: Delete 0000008f
  • CHN Region: Delete 000000A1
  • KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
  • TWN Region: Delete 000000B1

4. If it still doesn't work, try:

Booting without a game cartridge inserted.

5. Believe it or not, that can help you. If you have a hardmod and a NAND backup:

Try flashing the backup back to SysNAND.

6. If it still doesn't work:
Try booting into recovery mode and updating your system
  1. Power off your device
  2. Hold (L) + (R) + (A) + (Up)
  3. Power on your device
  4. If you enter safe mode, update your device

7. Finally, we have gone to the last conclusion.

Your device is probably bricked, but you can ask for help on the Nintendo Homebrew on Discord

Sad to say, your device is very likely bricked.

I'm booting to a blue screen!

1. Your device is bricked.
2. You will need to get a hardmod or repair / replace your device.

I'm booting normally, but:

drum roll please

igotbannedandiwanttounlinkmynnidwithoutformattingmydevicebecauseihavemypiratedgamesandcraponityay

bless you

Unlinking your NNID without formatting your device won't get you unbanned, but it can be useful in some cases.
You'll need to download the latest GodMode9.firm file from here: GodMode9

  1. Copy GodMode9.firm from the GodMode9 .zip to the /luma/payloads/ folder on your SD card
  2. Boot your device while holding (Start) to launch the Luma3DS chainloader menu
  3. Launch GodMode9 by pressing (A)
  4. Navigate to [1:] SYSNAND CTRNAND -> data -> (32 Character ID) -> sysdata -> 00010038
  5. Hold down the (R) trigger, then press (X) on 00000000 to rename this file
  6. Press (Up) once to change the name to 10000000
  7. Press (A) to save changes
  8. Press (A) to unlock SysNAND writing, then input the key combo given
  9. Navigate back to the Main Menu
  10. Press (Start) to reboot your device

Sorry for that long quote, but there are STILL more problems that we need to fix on your 3DS, right?

I recently upgraded from A9LH to B9S, and now I boot with a black screen!

1. Make sure you have a working payload. Make sure you have boot.firm on the root of your SD Card, and if it doesn't, well, I shouldn't have to explain.

Still not working

2. Try resetting Luma's config. Delete /luma/config.bin on your SD card. Set your settings when it boots.

Stilll not working...

3. Test booting GodMode9. On Luma3ds, hold start on boot.

What was that supposed to do?

If it booted, it's pretty much having a hardmod.

4. Try deleting homemenu's ext data. Go to this folder:

/Nintendo 3DS/(32 Character ID)/(32 Character ID)/extdata/00000000/

3. and deleting these folders (properly to your region):

  • EUR Region: Delete 00000098
  • JPN Region: Delete 00000082
  • USA Region: Delete 0000008f
  • CHN Region: Delete 000000A1
  • KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
  • TWN Region: Delete 000000B1

Still. not. working.

5. Try booting without any cartridges inserted.

PLz h3lp 4 3ds

6. If you previously downgraded with Gateway, ensure that you are using the latest Luma3DS version (v6.2.3 or higher, at the least)

Wow! That didn't work!

7. If your NAND is of a version between 3.0.0 and 4.5.0, do the following:
  • Ensure that you are using the latest Luma3DS version (v6.6 or higher, at the least)
  • Download this file and rename it to native.firm
  • Download this file
  • Copy native.firm and cetk to the /luma/ folder on your SD card
  • If you have Luma3DS version 7.1 or lower, rename native.firm to firmware.bin
  • Delete both of these files after updating your device

Please tell me that worked.

Nope. It didn't.

8. Try following 9.2.0 CTRTransfer

Didn't work.

9. Ask for help at Nintendo Homebrew on Discord.

sigh - who knew having a conversation between your self would be so hard
