Thanks! I forgot to mention that my 3DS is a N3DS XL (sorry! edited now), so this won't work ? :/
There's a guide for setting up CFW on the N3DS here.

If you're feeling ambitious you could also set up Arm9loaderhax. It takes a while to set up and seems quite risky at points, but you'll end up with a 100% bootrate! Just be sure to follow the guide word for word if you go this route.

Oh, so it'll just error and bitch about the TWL, it won't brick it?
Pretty much you go through and downgrade emuNAND then, after emuNAND is successfully downgraded you flash it to sysNAND. So worst case scenario at that point you end up with a bricked emuNAND.

I'd say just get any N3DS and downgrade it. The extra cash for one on 9.2 isn't worth it. Note that if you get one on 10.6 or 10.7, you'll need Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time to downgrade it.

I'd say cheaper and downgrade. It's pretty safe now. Many people report successful downgrades each day. I won't lie and say there aren't any brick reports though. Those come frequently as well but they may come from user error, so it might not even be the programs fault.

Don't worry about a brick. You won't get it. But no. You can't undo the brick if you don't have a backup of your sysnand before doing the downgrade. So let's say you hardmod it now and dump your sysnand, then you have a good backup. However let's say you brick and then hardmod and dump, then unfortunately, the dump is bad because it's already corrupted.

A hardmod/NAND dump prior to downgrading is the only way to recover from a brick if one happens.

There are a few guides that can help you out.

First, you'll want to set up the Homebrew Launcher.

There's a guide for downgrading here.

There's a guide for setting up CFW on the N3DS here.

You're screwed without the console if you mean the files in the Nintendo 3DS folder. Those "save" files are encrypted and your console is the "key" to encrypting them.

You want to have had used a save manager of some kind while on that console to extract them.

If you figure out how to decrypt any of that info let me know. I've got stuff I'd like to restore from an SD card as well, but I think you'll find that you're SOL.
