Thanks to both, really i'm feeling stupid now !

The thing is I'd like to stay on my SysNand, not on my EmuNand if possible. Like doing my emuNand but keeping the SysNand as when i'd the O3DS. if I can't do that, i'll not hack it I think. Too much OCD i know.

Okay, I am following Plailect's wonderful guide , but I have a question:

Before I started part 1, I copied the data off of my SD card and reformatted it to start fresh and make sure I had space for everything (using the tool and settings mentioned in Get Started of the guide). I kept the original data off while going through the steps.

I've now finished part 3 without problems, and at the beginning of part 4 it mentions that it's a good time to backup saves. What saves should I back up, why is this necessary, and is there anything I need to get out of the original SD card dump? Looking at the folders in the backup and on the current SD card briefly, I notice that some folder names / IDs are different in the "Nintendo 3DS" folder.

I also had some retail eShop and other games installed, and played streetpass games, etc. How much of this was on the SD card, and can I restore this / do I need to?

Do all saves need to be backed up using a save data manager and then restored once everything is set up? (For instance, if the saves are linked to a specific system ID that changes somewhere).

Thanks!

Okay, so I finished the guide, and everything went well. But, I don't think the files from my initial, pre-guide SD card dump can be restored to the new installation. Specifically, here are the contents of my "Nintendo 3DS" folder at various points:
  • Before starting anything, I had one subfolder: "1c..." which contained "f2...", which contains "backup", "dbs", "title", and "extdata." (1c -> f2 )
  • I then reformatted the SD card on the computer, put it in the o3ds, and started the guide. It created the folder "1c" -> "62"
  • After completing the guide, I have 3 subfolders, "fe", "a3", "1c"->"62".

I believe "fe" and "a3" aren't important. But if I simply copy the data from my very first dump, it won't merge because the subfolder for "1c" is different. Is this data important? The "backup" seems to hold some saves. What are the databases in "dbs" for? Can I simply overwrite the title, backup, etc. folders?

Also, with the post-guide system, my understanding is that I can install CIAs, and perhaps run 3dsx files in user-mode, but not run .3ds files. Is this correct?

Thanks again to everyone for the advice!

OMG, that worked!

But how can I download them from the eShop? I have never bought them, just installed the .cia. Does the .cia installation also affect the eShop?
Yes every time you install a game that can be bought on the eShop, the eShop thinks you've bought it. When you go to the eShop and search for pokemon yellow and select it, it will say 'Redownload'. Or you can go to your software available for redownload and it will be in the list.

This won't work in the long run. There will be more and more games that require a higher firmware than what you can keep in sysNAND, so you won't be able to play any games released after say July last year (?). Plus, you won't be able to play online. It makes much more sense to use emuNAND. It really is identical to sysNAND, only you can do a lot more stuff in it, and treat it as a legit system!

If you really want to keep using sysNAND, you can always install a9lh which lets you keep your sysNAND up to date, and yet exploitable.

I downgraded an old 3DS from 10.6 to 9.2, reinstalled Ninjhax for 9.2, installed PastaCFW and tried to run an app installer (not .3dsx)
However, upon doing so I was met with the following error:
"Install failed!
fileName.ext
Source: SOURCE_APP_INIT (0x3)
Module: MODULE_NN_SRV (0x19)
Level: LEVEL_PERMANENT (0x1b)
Summary: SUMMARY_INVALID_ARGUMENT (0x7)
Description: DESCRIPTION_ACCESS_DENIED (0x6)
Press Start to continue."
So I tried disabling FirmLaunch in PastaCFW's options and retried to install the app.
This time this appeared:
"Install failed!
fileName.ext
Source: SOURCE_APP_WRITE (0x6)
Module: MODULE_NN_FS (0x6)
Level: LEVEL_PERMANENT (0x1b)
Summary: SUMMARY_WRONG_ARGUMENT (0x8)
Description: <unknown> (0x18a)
Press Start to continue."
I am not sure what to do.
I have tried formatting the system and erasing the SD card but to no avail.
I doubt that it matters, but, just in case it somehow does, I will mention that I pressed A on "Format emuNAND" before any of this.
Also, a while ago before I updated to 10.6 from 9.2, I was able to install apps just fine.
Could I get some help with solving this issue please?

Is there any consideration I should take into account in order to downgrade mset from 9.9? Could anyone recommend a tutorial? I already have menuhax

Here is a guide that takes care of both downgrading and installing a9lh. It is slightly more complex than regular CFW but well worth it if you can follow instructions precisely. https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

Alright! I recommend Plailect's wonderful guide to others above looking for a guide to downgrade and install CFW on systems up to 10.0.6.

I've almost got everything I want working, but I am still struggling to recover the data from when I reformatted prior to starting the guide.

Here is my question: In a system that has completed the guide and autoloads Cake SysNAND, what will happen if I delete the "Nintendo 3ds" folder, or restore it to what was on a different SD card prior to the downgrade / CFW? I know that I'd lose the installed CIAs and have to reinstall FBI & Homebrew menu, but would anything else in the CFW get broken?

Also, the same question about the boot.3dsx and screenshots_raw.bin files

people please help. I can't run any CFW from menuhax or HBL. GW, Reinand, Cakes, RX, everything goes into black screen.
I redownloaded HBL v1.1.0, even formated the SD card. Still nothing.

the O3ds is in version 9.9U

Have you tried downgrading to 9.2? My New 3DS was on 9.0 when I got it, so the browserhax worked flawlessly. What method did you use? Was it working before? What micro SD card are you using?

Lol @GuyInDogSuit is right. To run cfw you have to downgrade to 9.2.

im a bit afraid of those downgrade techniques, i heard they could lead to brick :s Which is the safer one?
Oops you responded before I noticed. Don't be too afraid. They aren't as bad as people claim them to be. It's a little hyped up imo. Use this tutorial:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/simple-guide-to-downgrading-your-3ds.407888/

It seems to have a high success rate.
