Alright so, does it matter what kind of gateway cart I get or will ALL of them update whenever I start the exploit.

I see that the guide says I need a red GW cart, is this rule strict? As long as it's red it will update to the necessary version?

No, I'm just talking about Using a gateway card, I'm asking if it matters which version of the card I get. I'm not interested in downgrading or installing cfw really

CIA files are like archives for different stuff. By using Bigbluemenu/devmenu/Bigredmenu, you can install/extract the CIA to the console.
CIA games are like eShop games, they stay installed in the console (SD card) like an eShop game would.
You can also have themes, game updates, DLC, etc in CIA format.

As for Gateway, there's is only one piece of hardware. The GW box comes with two cards, a red and a blue one. The red is a 3DS flashcart and the blue one is a DS flashcart. You only need to use the blue one if you're in 4.x firmware.
So all you'll be using mostly is the red card. You'll also need a SD card for the 3DS (preferably 4GB or higher) and a mSD card for the red GW card (which is where you put the roms you wanna play)

I have no idea on the first part of your question, but cia files DO NOT work on sky. square peg in round hole.

As far as I know, it does that (playing in the DS's native resolution) when you hold Start or Select while starting it up. If you're not holding them, it could be that the buttons are stuck pressed, are they working fine otherwise?

Hi! Ive read somewhere that theres a chance that save data will be corrupted if i run a legit cart on the gateway classic mode. And as the mh4u release date approaches and all that is happening with ppl getting banned while playing online, i decided to get a physical cart of mh4u. Now the question, if i ever decide to upgrade to a n3ds in the future, will my mh4u save data get corrupted? Im on 4.2 sysnand and 9.5 emunand.

I think the solution to your problem will be to upgrade your sysnand now to 8.1 and play your cart on that so there won't be a problem when you move to a N3DS. There may be other solutions, I know some people are working on some with mixed results. Consult the guide, read the thread and ask some questions.

Ah. But upgrading past 4.5 wont let me use the ds profile exploit. oh well, guess ill be sticking to the old 3ds then. Thanks for ur input!

You need 3.0.4 to use emunand 9.5. Copy over new launcher.dat and then update emunand.

So, I've been playing the EUR scene release for Majoras Mask on my Gateway, and I've made some good progress. But I'm planning on picking up the USA version of the game on Friday. Will I be able to keep my progress?

Hi all! Got a really dumb question (hence why I'm asking here).

I don't have any interest in loading roms, but I somehow found an old 3DS with 4.5.0 at a local game store for pretty cheap and picked it up just to have something fun to tinker with.

Right now I have an 9.5.0 emunand on it through the DS profile exploit by gateway (don't actually own a gateway card yet), which I can obviously only load in classic mode.

The only real thing that I really want to do with this, as silly as it sounds, is create custom themes for it xD I'm just verifying that it's currently impossible to do this without a gateway card correct?

Only place I can think of for that would either get lucky, or go on Yahoo Auctions, even then the New 3DS can't really be hacked yet unless you have the Sky3DS. (Which I think works with the N3DS)

Is this thread still active? I have a few questions. I finally, finally have enough money to get a 3DS but I'm confused on which version should I buy (new/XL/regular 3DS.) I read this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/3ds-hacking-faq.280544/ I want one that's flashcard compatible and easy for a noob; doesn't matter what firmware. And something that can fit pretty cases. I wanted the FEA version but it's next to impossible to find.

Also hoping what ever version I get I can stick around with.

Oh and I don't need a flashcart for region free unlocking? I was looking for a flashcart that also would help with this too so I can play Puyo Puyo games from Japan.

If it's on 9.2, the region doesn't matter since gateway is region free already, and supports all 3ds regions.

So I'm trying to follow his wise words and get something that isn't super complicated or hard to find 3DS wise but I'm not even sure how to check the serial number with Japanese 3DS? I mean I can find Japanese shops and I know some Japanese.

Probably. If not, just keep playing EUR. Enjoy the region free feature, you paid for it.

There has been no jap N3ds reported to come with anything higher than 9.1. If you're still a little cautious, buy from Nippon yasan (sp?) I see they sent out a lot of 8.1 consoles and they have competitive prices
