So I just went out and got my 3DS and it has the 7.2 firmware on it. From the looks of things, Gateway might not be releasing support for anything higher than 4.5 anytime soon. Should I be patient and wait for what seems to the be the better card, from all my reading on there forums, or just go ahead and buy the Sky3DS?

Wait until new years for gateway to release the update, they have said in previous emails it will be out before then. Also because of the Christmas backlog it might easily take that long for your Sky3DS to be shipped/Processed.

I think this may have asked recently on here, but I can't seem to find the answer; if I play a game on my Sky3DS now, and then switch to Gateway when they release their 9.x support (whenever that is), is there a way I can transfer my save data over?

I've got a first generation 3DS, Currently at 9.4.0-22E.

Is Sky3DS my only option? Is it any good? I've got pretty bad experience with flashcarts and i would hate to drop 100 dollars on a flashcart with a 10 game limit that stops releasing new firmware a month down the line.

Not your only option. You also have the clone of Sky3DS. But other than that, not much choice.

Is it the best? No.
Is it enough for playing games? Yes.
Is it future-proof? Who knows. For now it works.
Do you have a better choice? Only if you get another 3DS 9.2 or below, preferably 4.x

Expected as much. I updated my 3DS today from 5.something to 9.4 thinking 9.2 was the lastest firmware, dropped the ball there. thanks though. might look into the clone see if it's any cheaper.

is there anyway to tell which system update is ready on a 3ds?

my daughters 3ds has a system update ready to install, but i have no way of knowing if its the latest or if its 9.2 or something.

hers is 8.1

i think she knows not to update it, but i wish i could disable that popup.

will this 8.1 become sought after hard someday?

it's most likely the latest and no, you can't check which one is it.
One way to remove it from the system is format the 3DS but depending on the firmware version, it might force you to update first so in that case it's pointless.
GW will support 8.1 in their next update btw

Everything that Sky3DS does, Gateway can do too. With the exception that GW doesn't support 9.3 and 9.4 firmwares.
For now GW works on 4.x firmwares but in the next update it will support at least 7.0-9.2.
GW also has more features than Sky3DS since it works differently. It's a different card using a different exploit.

could someone recommend the cheapest sky 3ds reseller in the us? i'm interested in picking one up
Check the Sky3DS website for official resellers to ensure you don't get a fake cart.

Also be aware that gw should be coming out by the end of the year, so I suggest waiting till then unless your 3DS is already above 9.2.

I am fairly certain the latest 3ds fw has been downloaded to my unit and is "ready to update". Can I still use my smash bros cart to update to 8.1? or will it update to the latest?

format your 3DS (without SD card inside). it will delete the downloaded update (doesn't work in higher firmwares since it's forces you to update first)

Since the Sky3DS can't spoof the system's firmware version, won't there come a point where Sky3DS users are forced to update their systems in order to run certain games?

Sky3DS users can update their system firmwares since it supports the latest firmware right now. if it will in the future? that's unknown.
