It depends! How do you want to do it? Normally it is only possible if your 3ds is already hacked...
How do you want to hack your 3ds? If you got a flashcard for ntrboothax you can easily unbrick your 3ds anyways...

I have a ntrboothax compatible r4. I asked on r/3dshacks if there is something unique about a 1.0.0 firmware before I hack it and someone told me to dump the ctr transferable image. I don't have any idea what the ctr transferable image does lol should I dump it?

Righto, finally about to get a ds cart cause I really want to play Dark Spire without having to shell out $100+ for a physical copy. My 3ds already has it's boots strapped, and I can't really afford another 3ds any time soon... so little need to hack another one. So then, here's the question.. which darn cart should I aim for? R4i Gold Plus with magic switch for switching? R4i SDHC? Something else?

Have a look at the first post. If you already have boot9strap it makes no difference if you get a card with a switch or without.

Hardmod (requires soldering) or DSiWare hax (requires a second console with CFW already). You need CFW for FBI to work

Im gonna install boot9strap on a console with 10.3. I wont have internet while im doing and i want to install at least FBI, but 3ds.guide says i need to update before doing that.

So can i install .cias/enter FBI (to install those cias) without updating?

So here's the thing; I attempted to homebrew my 3dsxl that I hadn't touched in a while. Checked the version, it was 10.5; sweet, i can use soundhax. Everything was going well, i'm following 3ds.guide to the T. But after i've installed safeb9installer and boot9strap; the 3ds xl doesn't turn on. The blue light switches on for a sec, then it disappears. I assume it's because it can't find the payload.

I've looked around and yes I have checked that i've got boot.firm on the root of the SD card. I've tried Luma3D ver: 8.1.1, 8.1 and 7.1; none of which work.

Plz help

Is your SD card FAT32? Did you extract the .firm files with 7zip?

Yes the SD card is FAT32.
I used winwar to extract the files out of 7zip

The reason I ask is because I thought you were using the ntrboot multi system 3ds method, and were putting the files in the wrong SD card
Anyway, if the 3DS turns on then off, it means that you don't have the proper payload. And if you just installed B9S, then it means that you are restricted to 8.0+ (So, don't try 7.1 and the such)
Perhaps try another SD card
