Well if there is an error with one of the files or something then that's one thing. An error in the guide itself that leads to bricks... that would be bad. I write technical tutorials myself and regardless of what has "already" been covered, if the material is very sensitive and can lead to loss of money, I make sure to reiterate every single small step of the process with great clarity to eliminated as much change of error as possible. In the end I know that it is indeed noobs who are using my guide and due to the nature of being a noob they may not know these simple details (like how to unzip a file, lmao). The point of a guide is to walk an idiot through disarming a nuclear bomb, you know? In the end if that noob blows blows himself up he is going to blame me and then what do I say? "Well, didn't you ready Hawking's guide to properly handling radioactive isotopes?" And the noob is like, "you didn't mention that in the guide." So its my fault....

Technically the change with the guide isn't due to the success rate (though is indirectly related), but the fact bricks with otpless method is random.
The problem is unknown, thus the discord server get a report of a brick while doing everything right at least once a day.

If you brick, would you rather have it be due to your fault or random chance?

aah, makes sense to remove the OTPless method..no one wants a brick due to a step in the guide.

Heh, that's a tough question to answer. I think I would rather brick because of something I did, definitely. Because if that were the case... there is a very slim chance of a brick ever occurring (knock on wood).

I agree, I have bootloader unlocked many Android devices (like 10-12 non Nexus one's), jailbroken a ps3 using e3 flasher, psp using pandora card and a few other hacks, the guides have always helped and never had a brick (touchwood)...

Alright, I have finished reading ThE guide for the third time and just have a couple of questions, otherwise it's fairly thorough, even with the small details. Sorry if some of the questions seems very noobile but I will be basically picking up a 3ds for the first time and trying to hack it by following this guide so I just want my T's crossed and my i's dotted.

1) If you check your SD for errors using "H2Tester" before starting the installation process for A9LH and Luma should it remain free from errors through the entire process? Or should I re-check the SD for errors when prompted to by the guide in "Section I - Prep work" on the "Installing arm9loaderhax" page?

2) Section I - Prep work

Copy the contents of starter.zip to the root of your SD card
Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS

When a brand new out-of-the-box New 3DS SD card is removed will it have any files on it? And for the purposes of this guide should I leave what files are already on the SD card (if any) when placing the contents of the starter .zip onto it?

3) After the last step on the "Homebrew Launcher (Browser)" page and the first of the "Decrypt9 (Homebrew Launcher" page more files are added to the SD card. I assume I am to turn off the 3DS by using the power button and remove the SD card to place the new files on it? Or can I use the "eject" function by hitting select?

The reason I ask is because Step 3. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS (on the before mentioned page) doesn't say "power on your 3ds" or "Insert your SD card" so I am guessing you can remove the SD safely using either method?

1. H2testw checks if your card is fake - if it isn't fake in the beginning then you should be fine for the rest of the guide. Plus testing it involves several hours plus having to back up the contents of the card since it gets deleted in the testing process.
2. A brand new 3DS will just have the Nintendo 3DS folder which you are free to delete if there's no game files or saves you want to keep. If you delete it then the 3DS will make a new one.
3. Using Select to eject or switching off are both fine, but turning off means you have to boot into Decrypt9/Hourglass9 again.

Yeah, I would rather NOT turn it off at all unless I am told to by the guide during this process. Thanks again.

Wait, a fake? o.O

How do you have a fake SD card? To be safe its probably best to just use the SD card that came with the 3DS for the CFW installation then, since it shouldn't be a "fake" card.

Chinese sellers make cards that look like full capacity in your PC, and if you try to fill it up it will use some of your hard drive. So if you put the SD back in your PC it can read all the data. But if you use it in another machine the extra will be corrupt or non-existent. A fake 64GB card usually has 16 real GB, a fake 32GB card usually has 8 real GB. It would be very rare to get a fake card from a real shop, it's only when you buy online that there's likely to be a problem.

Also I think I'm wrong about H2testw only testing for fake cards, there can be other problems too. But if they're not there the first time you test there's unlikely to be problems later, so no need to re-test.

Right, so. I have a 3DS which I had successfully hacked with A9LH and Luma. My brother has a 3DS on 11.2 that he wants to get hacked. If I:
  1. back up my nand with hourglass9,
  2. wipe the 3DS with TinyFormat,
  3. system transfer his stuff to my 3DS
  4. DSiWare inject
  5. Wait one week, then transfer back and finish installing A9LH+CFW
  6. Restore my original nand backup
Would I, at the end of this proceedure, have both successfully installed A9LH on his 3DS and - more importantly - would I be able to go back to using mine like before with online and everything without having to call Nintendo?

I mean, if I do have to give Ninty a ring to get online working on my 3DS it isn't the end of the world, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it. I'm fairly confident that this would work to get A9LH on his O3DSXL, I'm just concerned about preserving my 3DS's save data and online functionality - it'd suck if I had to redownload everything and inject save files.

Yes that's exactly what you'd do. And sign back into your NNID afterward.

I bought a 64gb micro sd card upgrade for my 3ds and it's formatted but when I copy and paste from my old one to the new one, I get the blue light and nothing comes on screen. Also I have no emunand. I have everything copied over to the new one.

11.2 a9lh+luma o3dsxl.
