I've had a black screen for over 30 minutes and I followed Plailect's guide. Should I wait more or...?

Did you by chance close the lid of your 3DS during that time? If you did, you may have a brick, I think.

Pop the SD card out, and delete the Home Menu data, like the guide says. Or try booting 2.1 without the SD card.

He said he did follow the guide's steps, though. Hmm..

Me too, but I've missed simple steps before.

Remove your SD card before you're booting. Once you're on the Home menu, put it back inside your 3ds.

So would it be safe to pop the sd card out while still having the black screen?

Just hold the power button to shut it down and then remove the SD card.
