3D Studio MAX or Maya

I wanted to learn how to create a 3d model using 3D Studio MAX or Maya...
could anyone recommended one of those (above) software are more likely to be made in video game and a book to get me started..


I'm thinking of rebuild master chief (halo) new look, etc

I prefer 3ds Max, the official tutorials that come with it can teach you a lot.
