Gaming 360 Disk reading problem.

I just got a used xbox 360 from a random person on craigslist, seem like a nice kid he was about 15-16 and he said he only used it for a bit and he only played a few games. Anyway, after picking it up I headed to best buy and grabbed Halo 3 and and Guitar Hero 3. Everything was fine all the games he gave me worked fine, Halo 3 worked fine but as soon as I popped the brand new copy of Guitar Hero 3 my 360 didn't even read it, all it says is; reading... with the loading symbols and then it says; open tray. As if nothing happened? or read? I have no idea what the problem is. Note: that this is the second guitar hero i returned the first one and got another one.

Can anyone help me?

Open tray means it hasn't even picked up the disc , it just doesn't know it's there. Only doing it with guitar hero is strange , only things I can think of that can help are either clean the laser or the open tray fix

But that'll void the warranty + I've never heard of it fixing the issue for untouched , not flashed drives. Of course that could just be because people who haven't flashed the drive will just send it in , rather than mess with it themselves.

If neither of them help , then I'd say a new laser is in order.

Ya I really rather not void the warranty but is not very odd that Guitar Hero is the only game not working? I was thinking maybe I would have to do some updates or something? Sorry I am quite the newb.

Needing an update would not cause open tray. If game needs to update it will launch , then say it needs an update and ask you to do it.

Open tray = system doesn't see disc , so it says open tray as it's prompting you to open it and put a disc in.

Bad disk? Ask Best buy for a replacement disk if possible

I did that already, I couldn't possibly see a second one not working.

Just doing it on one game is really strange

. It's possible you got two bad discs , can you check the disc is fine on another 360?.

I have tried the disk on a freinds 360 and it works fine, so it isnt the disk but still this doesnt make sense.

When did the original owner buy the 360? Maybe you can still send it to Microsoft. It's worth a shot.

Well it's out of warranty, but I think the porblem is a dirty lens because guitar hero started to work for a bit. How would I go about cleaning this?

Go out and get a CD or DVD lens cleaning kit. Thats what I used on all my DVD players and consoles. Cost like 5 bucks.

This seems like a bad xbox's 360 dvd drive.
The first 360 i got for 100euros with 4 games haf this problem and i returned it to the one i bought it from.
Disc read error while playing some specific games.

My console started doing that for my Guitar Hero discs, then it stopped reading all my games.

The problem is with the DVD drive, it is either dirty or it is screwed.

You're options are -

* Buy a lens cleaner (May not work, and Microsoft do not recommend this)
* Send to Microsoft for repair/replacement of your DVD drive
* Buy a new DVD drive and replace it yourself
* Send to a local console repair person

I wouldnt bother with a complete replacement drive, The lens itself can be bought for around £10 and its a 10 min job to swap it over

I did this with mine and now its fine again
