I was wondering, how many of you guys actually waited until the american release comes out? or did you guys actually just played a patched version of the japanese one?

Nope it only has japanese and english.
Depending on your flashcart you'll also need to patch it to prevent the freezing error.

You won't be able to play it right away until a new piracy check fix is made for the US version. Otherwise the game will freeze due to the piracy checks Square added.kevenka said:
The Japanese game contains both Japanese and English languages. Heck, the Japanese game contains the same translation/dialogue the English game uses.rcktstar said:

@Xdqwerty, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! is the Japanese version of the game, different settings/characters/songs but otherwise identical mechanics. I played that before I knew about Elite Beat Agents lol. Both fantastic games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osu!_Tatakae!_Ouendan+1 -
