    Wrong. You can use Magisk to root your device and still be able to play, also works for other Nintendo games. Edit: CyanogenMod is dead, LineageOS is the one to go.

    I've just done it a hour ago and had the same situation, just press SELECT as in the guide, if it doesn't work wait 10 sec. and power off. Put your SD Card in your PC and check for the OTP.bin file. Then go on and follow the guide.

    It was easy to bypass some of the restrictions, as one of the admins left a registry key in the administrative shares drive, which allowed me to get around the blocking of some sites.
