Anker PowerCore: The Switch Edition

Anker, one of the more prominent and higher end battery pack manufacturers, has partnered up with Nintendo to release an officially licensed Nintendo Switch Battery Pack. Featuring two different capacities, 13400mah and 20100mah, each device is "Optimized for Flawless Compatibility with the Nintendo Switch" as noted on Anker's web page. Boasting up to 10 additional hours of playtime for the 13400mah edition, this battery pack promises a proper battery life for a modern portable console, all in a tiny package. To start, we'll take a look at some of the features of the device as claimed on Anker's web page, box, and manual for the device:

  • 1.7 Nintendo Switch Charges
  • Up to 10 hours of additional play time
  • Power Delivery for Full-Speed USB-C Charging
  • PowerIQ for other devices
  • Recharges in 3.5 hours

And here are the more detailed specifications for the device itself:

  • Capacity: 13400mah Lithium-Ion Battery
  • Weight: 9.20z/260g
  • Size: 97 x 80 x 22mm
  • Standard Output: 5V=1.5A
  • PowerDelivery Input: 5V=3A / 9V=2.5A / 15V=1.4A / 20V=1A
  • PowerDelivery Output: 5V=3A / 9V=2.6A / 15V=1.6A

 

At first glance, the Anker PowerCore is a generally decent battery pack, feature and spec-wise. It includes the USB Power Delivery standard, which provides quick charging capabilities for USB-C devices, as well as Anker's own "PowerIQ" technology that appears to be an Anker equivalent to Quick Charging for standard USB devices that support it. The PowerCore itself has two ports you can charge from, one standard USB type A port that will support any USB device, and a dedicated USB-C port for USB-C devices. I find this to be a tad limiting, if you don't own many USB-C devices to take advantage of this particular port, but as this battery pack is mainly designed with the Switch in mind it's not a real major issue assuming the Switch is the reason you purchase this device.

So let's take a full look at the PowerCore itself. Inside the packaging you'll find the PowerCore, a nice drawstring pouch with the Anker logo, some guides and troubleshooting documents, and Anker even thoughtfully included a 3ft long USB-C to USB-C cable so you don't have to make an extra purchase to take advantage of the PowerDelivery USB-C port. Unfortunately, following Nintendo's recent rather backwards practices, the PowerCore does not include an AC wall adapter in it's packaging...but, as noted on the back of the box, you can simply use the Switch's own AC adapter to charge the device, no problem. The body of the PowerCore uses a dense, rubberized coating that gives the battery pack a rugged and durable feel to it, that feels like it won't get easily scuffed from constant use. The design of the device is rather simple and minimalist: on one face, you'll see the Nintendo Switch logo, and on the other you'll find the Anker logo. With the Anker logo, you'll also find a button that features 8 LEDs that can be used to display the current battery life of the device with a simple push. Size and weight-wise, the PowerCore is quite small, smaller even than my own wallet, and weighs around 9oz which gives it a good, comfortable heft but won't pull your pants down if you plop it in your pocket for a bit. As noted, the device has two output ports, USB-A and USB-C, which have a fair bit of room between them so your cables won't feel too "bunched together" if you wanted to charge multiple devices at the same time. The USB-C port also acts as the Input for the device when charging, and after some tests it appears you can't actually charge the Anker PowerCore and use the included USB-A port at the same time.

 

What We All Care About: Charge Times

But who cares about all that? Let's get on with the actual capabilities of the thing! The first thing we'll look at is the recharge time for the 13400mah battery. When I received my PowerCore 13400, the battery indicators were at 2 little LEDs (which, as noted in the documentation, is ~25%). Plugging it into the Switch's AC adapter, I found the PowerCore took around 4 hours to completely charge the battery to 100%, which is just a tad longer than the 3.5 hour claim Anker makes, but is rather acceptable for a 13400mah battery. Charging the Switch 0-100% from the PowerCore itself took approximately 3.5 hours, which is about the same as if it charged from the AC Adapter itself. I then tested the device on the Switch with a few different games, some that push the hardware more than others, to gauge how much extra battery you really get out of this 13400mah pack. All tests were done in portable mode, at ~50% brightness, in Airplane mode, with sound off and with both Joycons connected to the system at all times.

Without the Anker Battery:

  • The Legend of Zelda: BOTW took 3 hours and 15 minutes to go from 100-0%.
  • Mario Kart 8 took 3 hours and 32 minutes to go from 100-0%.
  • Mario Tennis Aces took 3 hours and 17 minutes to go from 100 to 0%.
  • Golf Story took 4 hours and 56 minutes to go from 100-0%.
  • Stardew Valley took 4 hours and 3 minutes to go from 100%-0%.

So, on average, we get anywhere from 3-5 hours worth of battery from the Switch itself, depending on the game, which is about average for the device.

With the Anker battery (please note that all times include the Switch battery life as well as the PowerCore's):

  • The Legend of Zelda: BOTW took 10 hours and 3 minutes to go from 100-0%
  • Mario Kart 8 took 10 hours and 25 minutes to go from 100-0%
  • Mario Tennis Aces took 9 hours and 57 minutes to go from 100-0%
  • Golf Story took longer than I could test in a day, but the Anker battery lasted ~8 hours here before it hit 0% so we can assume ~12+ hours.
  • Stardew Valley took 10 hours and 58 minutes to go from 100-0%

So with the Anker PowerCore 13400, we got around 7 hours worth of extra play time, not including the Switch's battery, with some of the more in-depth games which is well within (and in some cases, above) the 1.7x worth of charge Anker claims the PowerCore can provide. Heat wise, the battery pack didn't seem to push out much while in use. Even after putting the PowerCore in my pocket so I could walk around outside and play the Switch while charging, I noticed almost no extra heat from the device which is quite surprising for such a little thing. The owner's manual does state that, once the device reaches 140F/60C, the PowerCore will shut down automatically, but so far I don't think it's reached even half that on it's own. I tested a few other devices as well, which included charging multiple devices at the same time, and it works as expected for a normal portable charger. I was able to charge my Samsung Galaxy S8 with the USB-C port and the my Kindle Paperwhite at the same time, both managing to re-charge from ~25% each to 100% while the PowerCore only dropped from 8 to 5 LED lights worth of capacity left. My HP Envy x360 has a USB-C port that it can be charged from, but after some tests it appears this PowerCore doesn't push out enough power to actually charge the thing. But, with how small it is, it's basically as I expected.

 

Unfortunately, despite how great the PowerCore itself is, there is one rather major flaw with it: The Price. The PowerCore 13400: Nintendo Switch Edition currently retails for $69.99 on Anker's own site, as well as various other retail shops, which on its own may not seem like too bad a price for 1.7-2x more Switch playtime. However, Anker themselves offers a non-Switch branded PowerCore with the same capacity for only $45. For 400mah less, you can get the Anker PowerCore 13000mah for $36. For $66, you can get a 26800mah PowerCore that has 3 USB ports and can output 30w total. That is literally double the capacity for $4 cheaper than the Switch PowerCore. As far as I can tell, the Switch Edition PowerCore has nothing special about it beyond using a USB-C port for output (which the cheaper PowerCore's above don't offer) and the fancy Switch logo on the back. I cannot see that little change somehow worth $20-$30 more than a standard PowerCore. To be perfectly frank, you're better off buying the 26800mah PowerCore from Anker and slapping a $1 Switch sticker on one side of it.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Good build quality, feels very well made.
  • Accurate Switch charge times provided by Anker.
  • Ability to charge two devices at one time.
  • Small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket.
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Uses one USB-C and one USB-A port, which limits the kinds of devices you can charge at the same time.
  • Price is way too high for a 13400mah battery.

Overall

One of my biggest complaints with the Switch is it's rather meager battery life (despite being aware of the limitations of battery vs power vs size), and the Anker PowerCore 13400: Switch Edition basically gives the Switch the battery life a proper portable console deserves. It can push your Switch gaming sessions much longer than its own battery can provide, and is durable and small enough to fit in your pocket without having to worry about damaging the thing. Unfortunately, the price is simply way too high, no matter how you look at it, so I cannot in good conscience recommend buying this excellent device, unless you only buy Official Nintendo Products regardless of cost.
The only reason I'd buy a powerbank for my Switch is that can be easily attached to the back. This is just a normal powerbank. As such, I'd rather pay more and get a beast that can charge my phone and laptop as well.

Also, one charging USB-C port? lol. My 20 dollars power bank has two and holds the same amount of power.

I have to agree with this, I saw this weeks ago and got excited about a Officially Licensed Nintendo switch charger, but was easily disappointed by the price when I paid like half for the one I already have. I have two Anker batteries. (one with a usb c port and a usb micro port, both have two USB A ports) which cost me about $40 for both and has over 21000 mah.

As much it would be nice to have this one for the switch alone, I don't want to pay double the amount just to cover a licensing contract deal with a logo on it. But I did notice this one is shaped like a box rather than a rectangle like the one i have. I think it fits better in pockets by not being so elongated unless you have deep pockets. But you better off getting some key chain and attaching the battery's sack string to a place holder on your clothing or travel gear than buying this.
 
Anker makes nice stuff, but I think that the Aukey 30000mAh Power Bank is a better option.
P.S funny detail, if you putt a K at front off the Anker name you get "kanker" that means cancer in Dutch.....
 
I'm normally a fan of Anker products, but I got two 20,000mah battery packs with a combined price less than that of this new Anker one.

So in this instance, no thanks, I'll pass and tbh, I'd recommend anyone else to do the same.

My two 20,000Mah packs (well in total, I've got 4 20,000 now one of which (A Ravpower can do proper mains power supply), a 30,000 and several 10,000 and some lower capacity ones and a few high wattage multi-panel solar chargers. It's safe to say I don't like to be off-grid and not be able to charge my gadgets (and that's not counting the huge leisure battery and power inverter I keep at the van) :rofl2:) are great for when the wife drags me kicking and screaming to the caravan for a couple of days :D

USB-PD is not required to charge the Switch while you play. Source: I charged the Switch using the standard USB port on the PowerCore while playing with 0 problems. So long as the device can output over 7w (which all of the linked does), then you can charge the Switch while playing. It may not be as fast as USB-PD is, but it's still possible. Regardless, USB-PD is not an expensive addition to devices like this. There are various other USB-PD capable power banks around for far cheaper than this with the same, or more, capacity. They are simply from other brands, which I tried to avoid in this review to keep the comparisons within Anker's devices.

What was the battery life on Fortnite with it?
I don't play Fortnite, so I couldn't say, but you can for the most part just add a good 6-7 hours of battery to what you get now.

So can I like chain a bunch of these together in a backpack and play forever?
Unfortunately, you can't use the powerbank when it's being charged, so no daisy chaining these things for 134,000 mah battery :(

It's extremely slow though which is what I meant. Plus, why would you go for one without USB-PD just to save a few bucks if you can get USB-PD and not need to keep your Switch tethered to the powerbank the whole time you play.

Or you leave it as it is and get an old unit of measuring used for alcohol (10 gallons ~ 1 anker). Isn't anker also the expression for anchor in Dutch as well as in German? I know, it's not as funny as comparing it to a rather deadly disease...

You are right, and yes Anker is anchor in Dutch.

Actually the Anker battery with no PD not only charges the Switch more slowly but you can't play it while charging, if you do, both the powerbank with no PD and switch actually lose charge at the same time, so all in all, all battery banks with no power delivery are useless with the Switch unless you don't mind having the Switch sleeping while charging.

Yeah the RAVPower one is pretty cheap I think. Wasn't that around $60? And that one has a massive capacity. Only problem is, it's larger than many airlines will allow you to bring on board. I think many of them have a limit of around 20000mAh.
Not sure about that brand though, I don't know if it's good quality or not.
USB-PD may not be a terribly expensive feature but that doesn't change the fact that there are very few USB-PD powerbanks on the market currently. It's not a very competitive market which is why there's so much price variance. $25 may be a bit steep just for USB-PD, but depending on where you live it might not be easy to get the cheaper RAVPower one or maybe you want something you'll actually be able to carry on airplanes. Then you have even fewer options.
Anyway if I had the choice between this or the version without USB-PD I would go with this for the extra $25 just for that USB-PD. But given other options like the RAVPower I might go with that instead.

From what I know it should be able to charge very slowly even when playing Zelda. Tests have been done on power consumption and I think it was something like 9W at most when undocked, fully charged Switch playing Zelda and the JoyCons are charging, and many people say a 2A or more powerbank (or wall adapter) is able to charge the Switch slowly during the most demanding loads (which would be 10W)
I actually don't mind charging the Switch in sleep mode but I'm not one to keep the charger plugged in all the time, and if I run out of juice in the middle of a game I want to be able to plug in and continue playing. Which I feel is a safer bet with USB-PD since you know it'll provide more than enough power.

No, I mean the ones I linked in the review will, and any that can output at least 7.5w+ will (aka 5v 1.5a) which most modern powerbanks usually do at minimum. All the linked powerbanks output at 10w+, as they use Anker's Power IQ (AKA literally just USB PD, but named differently and is designed to output lower amps), and are significantly cheaper than this vs capacity. There's no reason this should cost more than something with double the capacity from the same manufacturer, regardless if it uses USB PD.

If you want to spend more money for a guarantee, I can't fault that or say you're wrong, but IMO its not worth it to spend more and get less.
 
Sounds like you're paying extra for the Nintendo (tm) co-branding, just like you do with certain sdcards that have been overpriced since the Wii days, and on through the Wii U and Switch, even though the same cards from Sandisk or whoever without the Nintendo (tm) branding are much cheaper and work exactly the same if not better.
 
It's pretty expensive. I could already buy two 10000 mah powerbank for 30 dollars and two 20000 mah for 60, this is just a ripoff.
