Product Information:

The Nintendo Switch killer...?

attachFull90902

While the whole world was eagerly awaiting for the Nintendo Switch's release on March 3rd, 2017, GPD had quietly released their pocket handheld PC gaming device, the GPD Win, in October 2016.

Okay, maybe not so quietly since the console was successfully crowdfunded on indiegogo, raising 535% of its initial goal.

The team behind the product is Shenzen-based technology company GamePad Digital (GPD). In the past, they have created several handheld video game consoles which run Android on ARM architecture. But the GPD Win has been their most ambitious gaming device yet; packing a PC gaming handheld into your pocket. When I came across this product, I was really intrigued as to what it could deliver and surely, you might be curious too. So let's take a look!

The Contents

The GPD Win comes in a fancy box, which contains the following:

  • The GPD Win console
  • Screen protector
  • User Manual
  • Earphones
  • USB-C cable
  • Charger

I must say that I am impressed by the quality of the included earphones. I was honestly expecting some cheap knock-off but they do deliver quality sound (for earphones at least)! And you'll have to rely on earphones or headphones because not only is the speaker of not-so-great quality but it is also oddly positioned, just so your right palm can properly cover it giving you muffled sounds in real time.

At 365g, the heavier GPD Win has a similar form factor to the Nintendo 3DS. See them next to each other below:

At first I thought the position of the gaming buttons and joystick were oddly placed but they don't cause any inconvenience whatsoever while gaming but I had to retrain my muscle memory due to the uncommon layout. I deplore the lack of clickable joysticks but at least there are physical L3 and R3 buttons as replacement.

At its rear, the device hosts some handy ports and here again I'll complain about the odd location of the headphone jack but I believe these design choices were made in order to fit everything in the small form factor. While the internal ROM is limited at 64 GB, you can always upgrade with a TF card of up to 128 GB via the slot also located at the rear.

For those interested in the device's innards, the GPD team has got your fantasy covered with a teardown video:

The Gaming

When it comes to PC gaming, the specs are of particular interest. This Windows 10-based handheld packs the following:

And what can these do?

This:

This:

These games are the perfect fit for the GPD Win

Also this:

Oh, and this:

inb4 the Switch

And team GPD has recently made a video compilation series of the "Top 101 Playable Games on the GPD Win" on their official YouTube channel. It's still a work-in-progress but see if you can find your favorite games being demoed (good luck):

Games range from GTA V, Resident Evil 6 and Sims 4 to the Mass Effect Trilogy, Starcraft, Fifa and Fallout. Also, many, many more. Yes, the GPD Win has at its door the whole library of PC games, new and old.

But given its specs, newer games need some tweaking and some might not even work properly. Thankfully, the GPD Win has an established community that have pretty much figured out which games work best on the console, and Reddit is the place to find such a list.

A guide that I also found handy to set up the handheld was this post made by user headkaze. In particular, it walks you through the steps to get the right display settings for the screen (the default Windows ones are too tiny or if magnified can be troublesome to manipulate since some parts of the screen is out of bounds)

As for the battery life, the non-removeable 6700mAh Polymer Li-ion battery will give some peace of mind. And in true gaming PC fashion, the GPD Win features a fan whose speed can be controlled via the back switch to be optimized for dissipating heat or saving power.

attachFull90931

attachFull90920

And let's not forget about emulators! The GPD Win can emulate an impressive number of consoles, and at a playable rate! See the PSP God of War emulation for example:

And also SNES, GBA, N64, PSP, and Wii:

Also Gamecube, Dreamcast, NES,... you get the drill. But with the GPD Win, you'll have to learn to be patient and tweak the configs before enjoying a game. Again, the GPD Win community will be handy, like this YouTube video to setup Dreamcast emulation.

The PC

While the GPD Win is veered towards gaming, let's not forget that it also packs Windows 10 and is a computer at its core. Sure, it's not meant to replace your desktop or laptop but this palmtop can help you out in a pinch:

Inception!!!

And in dire cases, you can even boot PhotoShop on the tiny device:

The possibilities...!

And with its HDMI and USB ports, you can hook the device up to a larger display, mouse/keyboard or printer to suit your needs.

attachFull90934

The Legend?

The GPD Win does, at the same time, more and less than the Nintendo Switch; it has a huge PC gaming library for gaming, emulators at hand and even full-fledged PC functions. But if you're looking to play the newest Nintendo games with some motion gimmicks then look elsewhere.

If you've been looking to get into PC gaming and want to play a bit older games like Skyrim, Resident Evil 6 or emulate retro consoles, then the GPD Win is for you. Don't expect to get high-end PC gaming on the go but it's the closest you'll get. If you're not fussy about fps, 4K display and graphics, then with patience and some tweaking, you'll get more than a satisfactory gaming experience with this oddity. But it won't come cheap. The GPD Win is priced at $450 on Amazon while the Nintendo Switch is slightly below $400. That's the price you'll have to pay in order to enjoy PC gaming on the go. Others can always suggest getting a low spec PC/laptop for that price but the GPD Win is the only one that can do so and properly fit in your pocket.

Overall

The GPD Win is an innovative and ambitious console. It fits PC gaming into your pocket but it comes at a steep price and you'll need patience to unlock its full potential.
The GPD Win is $360 on official resellers and you can even get it to $330 with a coupon. I feel like the reviewer didn't really play much with the device since he missed out on the most important con, heat. The thing gets pretty hot. It also has problems with sleep since the sensor is too sensitive. Old games don't work well in some cases due to the portrait screen that was rotated. I hope GPD Win 2 actually fixes the heat, clickable buttons, speakers and better keyboard positioning.

S
that button placement for start select r3 and l3 is weird, someone's gonna mess up their volume reaching for those buttons

Well, I do notice the heating but the fan can be boosted to dissipate excessive heat. It hasn't bothered me enough for me to mention it.

As for the sleep issue, you can modify the settings in Windows to "never sleep".

Sweet review! But pretty pricey for something with those specs. Of course because it's portable. Although, switch brings in the much better specs for the price. Hopefully the switch can get more games and a portable-only version or something like that. BTW in the pros you spelt "emulators" as "emmulators".

If it heats up & expensive then it's useless.
To say that this is useless is a just wrong. If it doesn't even fulfill the things it promises then yes, it is useless but from this review? It is far from it.

Anyways, nice review @Prans! Might get one for my birthday as being able to play GameCube games on the go is pretty nice!

I said if it heats up & if it's expensive then other consoles (which are better then it). Then it's useless.

Very nice review, I've been after one of these myself for a good while, but I'm also in the classic 'got no money' situation...

It's still on my to-buy list for when it drops down in price though! Definitely need something more smaller and 'beefier' to replace my Linx Vision tablet.

Thanks for everyone's input!

@Haider Raza , yes it does heat up but it hasn't inconvenienced my gaming experience for me to complain aboutnit. I did mention the fan and you can boost it, should you require more heat to be dissipated.

@DeoNaught yes it does indeed charge via the USB-C :)

Says who?

Who doesn't? If you haven't been through the Kickstarter campaign back then, please go there and see for yourself how poorly this was managed (no capable staff, no working-as-advertised prototype even until now, bad communication, childish behaviour from those in charge)... just to cancel the campaign altogether at the end and start taking pre-orders without any insurance that you would see anything in the end... that was the scam.

I've backed, and been following since the start. You're exaggerating a lot, and you really can't make that assumption.

Wait, how is this better than Zelda? This bloody website.

Anyway I shall probably wait for round 2 or the competitors to step in but it is nice to have a more open platform again.

Oh, so it's denial. Well, if you followed the progress, you might have noticed that they don't show a working prototype without "bad camera placement". Professionals wouldn't put the camera so they could be hiding anything important, would they?
So where exactly am I exaggerating when I only state things everyone can see for themselves?

I'm sorry for you, since you probably wasted your money, but please remind me of this conversation in 3 months. PGSLab said it'd be "scheduled for this summer" in one of their videos a month ago. If they actually release it until Sep 22 (2017 just for the record) I will gladly transfer you the amount you paid for it as soon as you can confirm to actually have received it and if it does at least have the hardware features advertised in the campaign. If this is not a scam, I'd be glad to waste my money for my own ignorance, when I thought others would have wasted their money. How does that sound?

Switch is $300 when actually in stock, and I got a 2-in-1 tablet/laptop with better specs than GPD Win for $250. Several years ago. Refurbished, but still. The Intel HD Graphics chip and lack of clickable sticks really kill this thing, especially given the high pricing.

I have a GPD Win, in fact I backed the Indiegogo crowfunding campaign. I really like. There are flaws (my personal irritant is how hot it can become) with the device but for what really is a first iteration of this type of device, I think it turned out well, GPD implemented good ideas on this device. The price was fair in the end (£300 ish), you can't really get a handheld PC running Windows and this is a niche product. The real exciting thing is when the tech becomes cheaper and more powerful with additional hardware refinement particularly with the control placement, that will be balling.

Controls look awkward. I don't like the analogue sticks being directly next to the face buttons and D-Pad, having them above and slightly offset is really ideal.

I have one and personally it's one of the greatest gadgets I ever purchased. In my opinion, it is far better than the Switch.

What you do about the cooling?
Doenst you cover the Airoutput with your fingers, when gaming?

Thats 17 minutes of proof -edited because I forgot this was gbatemp cant be 2rude-, eating shit ironically is still eating shit
I think you need to go back to pre-school and relearn logic, because clearly, you don't know what the word proof means.

Looks like maybe 45-ish, idk.

Oh okay, guess I should've watched some of the videos. Seems like it's one of the newer gen Intel HD gfx, at least.

Edit: worth noting that they never step outside in that Skyrim vid, though, and there seems to be more stuttering as he gets close to the exit.

Well considering it can run emulators of all Nintendo consoles up to and including the Wii, it already has more Nintendo games than the Switch ;O;

$450 on Amazon

Or $375 elsewhere or even more elsewhere (and it's on sale for $350 at the moment). Yes they are Chinese stores but it is a Chinese device so it only makes sense :tpi: They are both well known and pretty reliable stores.

$450 is a bit steep for a gaming console but is actually pretty low for an UMPC of comparable specs (and $375 doubly so).
I know the majority doesn't care about this aspect but gaming aside this is a full Windows PC (for those who like to lug something like that around) and this accounts for (part of the) price.

(Speaking of which, you spent very little time on that part of the review, you never said how it does spreadsheets, 2/10 review, would not read again ;O; )

The Switch goes for $400 on Amazon so the price difference isn't that high, and anyway it's pointless to compare two devices with such different game libraries. This is a (slightly outdated) PC and can offers not only (slightly older) PC games, but also with PCs backwards compatibility and a range of emulators the gaming library is fucking vast.

The only fair comparison is with other Windows machines but there are none in this form factor yet. You could check out Windows 10 tablets, but they're a whole other kettle of fish.

The Snatch Smach Z is often mentioned as an alternative and it looks really interesting but it's not out yet. It boasts better specs at a lower price (for the preorder units) but a retail price has not yet been announced. Production prices tend to add $100 to the preorder/backer price, and this may well end up more expensive (and the GPD Win may also get a price cut once this comes out). Once both of them are out and if the concept of a portable Windows gaming console is proven to work, we may see even better machines in the future.

The entire PGS project has been very suspicious from the get-go. I would love to be proven wrong but until backers start receiving finished units, or at least until media start getting pre-production units for review, I will remain skeptical.

Check out some of the other videos out there, they show more of the gameplay. Here's one, it's all outside, and with a visible FPS counter, it's keeping above 30. Bear in mind this requires some tweaking of settings, and possibly a low-res texture pack, and here's where scalability of PC games come in handy :)

And they call me a pessimist. There is the virtual console.

Equally on spreadsheets
"screen resolution 1280x720"
Back when I were a lad we did work on our 800x600 screens and were happy only that we weren't older CGA screens and they had full colours.

Well, that's amazing! I don't mind tweaking, But I guess is not a good idea to put Visual Studio on that thing. Otherwise, I migth consider it. O well, can't have anything I guess.

I can happily say I own one of these tiny beasts. The only problem I ever noticed was the internal 64 GB storage space. Only about 27 GB was available. I have a 64 GB micro sd card in to make up for that. So now I can safely store all of my porn I mean games and play with myself, I mean the games. Overall I'd give it a solid 9.5/10.

Well, 23-30. Not bad I guess, but it's still lowest settings. I expect the Switch version will both look and run better, and on a less expensive device. Handheld PCs still have a way to go, obviously. To get strong performance, most people would just use GPD Win for pixel games and emulators, and your phone works just as well for those.

I own one of these bad boys, and I can say Yes and No.
it's just a portable ps3 and xbox360 (mostly earlier games), can emulate atari all the way to gamecube, I mainly use it for portable MMO toilet play.
THAT'S IT, The BEST MMO TOILET DEVICE EVER!!!!! I got this playing Final fantast 11, most of the korean grinders, and Sexy Beach 1,2 and 3. also R@PELAY... shhhh.... on the GO!!!!, It's the Best Portable mini Computer.

as for it being better then Nintendo Switch, I'd say..... No. it's just a Laptop.

I thought about getting a nintendo switch until I saw this review and checked out a ton of videos. I have one set to arrive thursday now :D
The biggest knock on Switch is that people think it isn't powerful enough, but this is even less powerful than that and with shorter battery life. Hope you at least paid $325 or less, because it's definitely not worth a price of $440. There's certain to be a second model with needed improvements in the works.

Haha well you may laugh, but my initial reasoning of getting this was not to play the best of the best games out there. I have significant amount of games in my steam library, and one of my main reasons for wanting this was to play skyrim and Mabinogi, all from the comfort of my bed xD

Yeah I get it, my Steam library is nearing 1200 games, and at most maybe 1/5th of them are newer AAA games. I'd be tempted to get this just to play indies and emulators, but the price would have to be lower, and I'd be worried about having too many issues/nitpicks with this early model regardless.

I can definitely understand your reasoning behind that too, it does make sense. I do have a gaming laptop anyway though, this is just if I'm too tired to go sit at my desk or something and feel like lying down :P that and I tend to game on mobile things a lot more than consoles xD

I have one of these!
It's pretty nifty. I use it to play visual novels on the train :)
The battery lasts forever. I can get a day's use of it without charge.
The keyboard is small, but you do get used to them after a few days. They are initially stiff, but they do loosen up with use as well
The ABXY, DPAD, shoulder buttons and joysticks are very good as well.

I don't doubt they could fulfil the same function for some people but those differences mean you are risking and apples and oranges comparison.

my dell lattitude 11 with m3 6y30 costed the same from dell outlet. too expensive...
You got a Dell Latitude 11 for $400? They still retail for upwards of $1000, I would love to visit that outlet.

I checked further and I stand corrected, they are $350 and up on Amazon. Serves me right for checking Dell's official store (why are they still showing launch prices? Weird).

There's a similar device that is Linux-based, the Pyra. You might be interested.
The Pyra looks good on paper but it's not out yet, and it's being developed by the same team that made Open Pandora and we all know how that turned out. I hope they've learned from past mistakes, or the Pyra will be released in 5 years and cost an infinite amount of money.

There has been a lot of progress in running Linux (several Linuces, in fact) on the GPD Win and all in all it looks usable, the hardware compatibility / support looks pretty good. As far as setting it up, here's a guide, here's another; looks long-ish but no more fiddly than any other Linux installation :tpi:

I have a question. if you play the game and hooked it to hdmi screen, will it suffer a performance penalty?

Hmm, it says it uses an Intel Atom x7-Z8700, yet only has 12 EUs @ 200 - 600Mhz like an x5-Z8500. So, it's either capable of 96~134.4 GFlops (if the x5), or 153.6~179.2 GFlops (if the x7). Not exactly a Switch killer if looking at it with direct competition, but you could play a relatively high number of PC games on low settings. Maybe not the newest stuff, but that catalog for on-the-road would hold you over for quite a while. Not including emulation. How would Dolphin fair on this?

You can use duplicate screen function with no lag, however the fan and keyboard are hardwired to GPD Win's screen so you must keep the screen on all the time

Dolphin is pretty good for some games:
Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime (Use Ishiiruka build for better performance)
MGS: The Twin Snakes
Mario

x86 Windows portables are where it's at in my opinion, I really hope that this kind of devices ousts ARM handsets in due time as they support a slew of software that, until now, required a desktop, a laptop or a proper Windows tablet to run. The only thing the GPD Win is lacking is a PCIe-ready dock for adding hardware and using it as a desktop when at home - if you could connect a discrete card to this thing and *still* take it out when needs be, I'd throw all my money at it. It's a shame that it lacks Thunderbolt, I wonder if the built-in USB-C port has PCIe lanes to spare.

Well, Atom x7-z8750 is old and does not support many advance functions like Thunderbolt, maybe in GPD Win version 2 they will use AMD Ryzen or Intel Core-M Karbylake for Thunderbolt

If I had money to waste I'd get that MacBook looking one just as a desk toy.
This device falls under UMPC category rather than laptop category, sure a MacBook is way better but only if you could pay the price-tag, in my case I should pay 1.000$ for Asus or Acer gaming laptop rather than MacBook

The cheapest I can find it new, even from China, is about $360. And Intel HD Graphics is not worthy of the moniker "beast." You can find tablets and laptops cheaper than GPD Win with better GPUs.

I'm aware of the size difference, but that doesn't change the fact that you can buy a device better suited to gaming, and at a lower price. Way lower (as in half the price or less) if you go for the same Intel HD Graphics.

I'm seriously considering getting this right now. The appeal is so obvious that I'm baffled that there aren't many more competers in this segment (alas...the smach z is facing so much delays that vaporware is really becoming likely :\ ). And that is especially because Xzi is right: price-wise, the technology isn't cutting edge. In fact...with those hybrid laptop/tablets...why hasn't anyone created a "keyboard" part of that thing that contains a gamepad? The very thing that makes something a handheld is in the name, ffs: it has to be able to be held in your hands. I've got a nvidia shield tablet. It's a fantastic device...but to really use it as a handheld, I have to glue the tablet to a controller.

But as far as I can see on this device, this is just a really small (windows) laptop that just so happens to have a gamepad above the keyboard. And yes, it requires tweaking, but what other possibilities are on the market right now that allow you to play your steam and GoG library on the go? (without that "on the go" part requiring four hands)

Also...I've found some rumors on a "GPD win 2" device. Anyone has some real info on that, by any chance? :)

@flame1234: just picture google "sidetalking". Using something way too big as a phone is a meme since the ngage. ;)

The specs is confirmed, but the release date is not confirmed, the first batch of Win2 may sell at the end of 2018:
SoC
  • CPU: Intel Core M3 7y30
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 615
  • Relative Performance: 250% CPU, 220% GPU (Performance when the 7y30 is running at full 7W)
  • Relative Performance per Watt: 220% CPU, 200% GPU (Performance when the 7y30 when running at 6W, like the Win 1, instead of default 7W)
  • This image puts it in perspective.
TLDR: It's twice as strong at the same power consumption, and at 7W even stronger. It would match the Z8750 performance at only 3W.

Storage
  • RAM: 8 GB - Maybe there will be a 4 GB option as well.
  • There will be an m.2 slot, details in the section below
  • Storage: 128 GB, either eMMC or SSD (maybe they use the m.2 slot as internal mem?)
Internals and controls
  • L3/R3 are on the back, next to the other triggers. Official image
  • As you can see, they will keep microSD, USB-A and USB-C but change Mini HDMI to Micro HDMI
  • There will be an m.2 slot. Official image, there is no labelling so I marked it
  • Sticks will be moved to the outside to have enough space in the middle for a better heatsink.Mockup
  • This is the keyboard layout. F1-F6 are there because many Chinese online games use it.
Release date and other info
  • Release date is "some time in 2018"
  • No further public details because they said it might hurt the Win's sales
  • Price will be higher. No numbers yet.
  • There hasn't been a word about crowdfunding, it is likely though since they did it with the Win and Pocket

Okay...just got mine in the mail. While the "feel" of the thing is nearly everything I came to expect from the device, I gotta say that the small text size and scrolling with a thumbstick is more a hassle than I thought it would be (of course this will just be until I configure things enough so all I have to do is click "launch game"). I recommend teamviewer to get things done.

Review will come later (obviously not now: I've barely used it. :P ).

Okay...a double post, but I've started writing my own review here. It's pretty chaotic, but I absolutely got the same device as in this review. And I absolutely love it. :D
