Review Approach:

Oh man, I wanted this device since day one. I was ecstatic going into this review!
The Amiiqo is a unique device that works alongside an android phone to backup and restore all Amiibo toys and cards.

Like my review of the MaxLander several weeks ago this review was done in a video format.  Once again it's a three for one video (unboxing, tutorial, and review) that will go over everything that you need to know about the Amiiqo.  I hope that you enjoy it!

Written Review

The written review that follows is taken verbatim from the video review, so if you truly want to know every detail about the Amiiqo I suggest watching that for more detailed information.  The written review is meant as a text reference to the review in the video that starts around the 6:59 mark:

Let me start off by saying that the Amiiqo is a godsend for people like me who want it all, without having to actually carry it all.  I use my 3DS all the time, but having to carry around Amiibo is a chore that the Amiiqo solves.  It’s extremely simple to use and I can’t imagine it being any more straightforward.  All of the instructions are in plain English and easy to understand.

What is the biggest issue for people who like to collect toys, but want to keep them in mint condition?  They’re not allowed to play with them!  With Skylanders, you’re allowed to use them while they are still in the box, but that is not the case with Amiibos which force you to open them in order to get them to play on your console.  The Amiiqo solves that problem!  Now you can keep your collection in mint condition while still enjoying everything that they have to offer.

In addition, for those who are completely clumsy with their toys, you can use the Amiiqo to constantly back them up in case you break it.  Now you don’t have to lose your progress just because you accidently ran your rare Roselina Amiibo over with your car!

And then there are those who just want to play games with Amiibo functionality without spending the time searching for rare figures to be bought by scalpers.  The Amiiqo works for those people as well.  If I had to think of a downside to the Amiiqo, it’s that the easiest way to use it involves having an android phone that doubles as an NFC scanner.  My main phone doesn’t allow that, so I was lucky that my backup phone did.  However, the Amiiqo team now sells a device that allows you to use your Amiiqo on your PC through USB, so it’s accessible to everybody.

People were initially up in arms about the price of the Amiiqo.  “$80-90 is insane!” we said in unison.  Personally I was not attracted to that price either and was waiting desperately for competition to show up to force them to lower their price.  However, even though it is still the only tool that works with Amiibo, they recently cut the price nearly in half!  The Amiiqo is being sold for only $55 today, which makes it even cheaper than the MaxLander which is the Amiiqos equivalent for Skylanders.  For those who bought the Amiiqo at the higher price point, be sure to contact the Amiiqo team because last I checked they were offering to ship either a second Amiiqo unit or the new USB tool to their early adopters.

I have one last thing to say about the Amiiqo team and that is that they are extremely nice and provide great customer service.  The first time they shipped the Amiiqo to me it got lost by DHL, nowhere to be found.  After talking with the Amiiqo team through email they immediately shipped out a second unit, apologizing for DHL.  They also assured me that shipping issues are not common with them and that my situation was unique.  I am only mentioning it because I wanted to elaborate on how helpful and accommodating their team is.  The unit that wasn’t lost arrived after only two days.  The thing ships all the way from Hong Kong and it only took two days to get to me in the middle of the United States!  That’s pretty impressive to me, so kudos for that.

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this product and I recommend it to any and all Amiibo lovers.

Overall

The device does exactly what it promotes. and it is very easy to set up and use. I recommend it to all Amiibo lovers.
Of course the Amiiqo team was very nice to you. The news threads about the Amiiqo were more promotion than news and they wanted a great review. They got one and in my opinion the score of 9.5 is far too high. This is nearly perfect. There is only android support. The price is still far too high for a dongle. 'Lack of support for Skylanders or Infinity' is a very big minus. It seems this is not a technical problem. They just want to sell different devices. Why is there 'fast shipping' in a product review? I could write a whole book about things that are wrong with this review. I am used to biased reviews on gbatemp and I am ok with that, when users review a game of their favorite franchise or a game they personally love. But please try to write more objective in a product review.

If I hit the 200 Amiibo limit (not likely), am I able to back up the ones I have stored (on my PC or phone) and switch back to it later?

Also, are you able to rename Amiibos from the app, or only from the Wii U?

I think that you referenced the MaxLander when we promoted them, because they sponsored us. The Amiiqo gave us no money so I wasn't influenced by them at all (and I wasn't with the MaxLander review either because I wrote the review before the sponsorship). The reason there's no iPhone support, I assume, is because it can't read NFC data so it's not that they're trying to screw iPhone users, but that it's not possible. If I'm wrong, then I'm sure an update will come in the future to support it. It doesn't support Skylanders and Infinity but they didn't advertise that it did and that's also due to hardware. The MaxLander works for Skylanders and not for Amiiqo. I'm sure if it was possible to do at a decent price point, they would immediately. As for the price, it's down to $55 and anybody who already bought it at the higher price point is eligible to get a second one free.

Fast shipping was important to mention because I would dock points if it took forever to get here. Wouldn't you? And I admit that yes, the reviews on GBAtemp can be biased. We're not IGN and we only review what we want to review. There are times when we have a chance to review something and we don't do it because nobody wants to actually play the game or try the unit. That said, your points are valid and in the future I will try to look more at the negatives of a product I'm testing. But I'm truthful when I say that my perceived score of the Amiiqo is a 9.5 even if it seems high to you. I mention in most of my reviews (alas, I forgot to this time) that the overall score is my own personal opinion and that nobody should ever decide whether or not to buy a game (or in this case product) based on a single review.

That's a good question, but I would reckon yes. Because you can trade the Amiibos back and forth between the Amiiqo and the phone so I don't see why you can't simply store it in a folder and then put it back on later. And I don't know what you mean by renaming Amiibos. You can rename the file easily, but are there games where you give unique names to your Amiibos?

Yes, when you first use an Amiibo (in Splatoon at least) it would ask what you wanted to name it.

So let's say I have Kirby and I train him to level 5 in Smash Bros.. He learns from how I play. Can I transfer my Kirby to my phone and delete him from the Amiiqo? Can I add him back on later and he'll still be level 5?

Well I don't have the game to try, but I do know that if you backup your Kirby he'll retain all of his stats. It doesn't put a blank slate on your phone. So you can have a level 5 kirby, put him on your phone as a level 5, then put it on the Amiiqo as a level 5. I'm really not sure about renaming your Splatoon characters though.

Thank you for your long answer @Ericzander.

There are not many websites with reviews of flashcarts and devices like the Amiiqo and gbatemp is one of the biggest or the biggest at all Nintendo related. If you think about buying a game you can read different reviews and can even look at sites like Metacritic if there are very different opinions. This is not possible for something like the Amiiqo. The people rely on gbatemp. This is why I am so harsh with your review.
I don't want to make a big deal about the shipping, but there are different resellers and gbatemp users are from all over the world. So I don't think your personal experience with the shopping is very relevant in a review. Maybe a comment like 'I got it from X and the shipping to Y was very fast.' can be useful, but it doesn' belong in the verdict of a product review.

Hey. Nice review, been looking for one of these. I have a question: where did you buy this online? All the current U.S. Resellers are either Chinese and keep spitting out "high risk" errors when ordering, or they don't look legitimate at all. I'm looking for the bundle with the amiiqo and amiiqo reader/writer USB thing.

Thanks,
-Matt

Mine came directly from the manufacturing team so I can't recommend a reseller unfortunately. However they are manufactured in China so don't be intimated by seeing the package coming from there. I would just pick one of the retailers listed on their site.

Unfortunately, all of their resellers are either down, spit out errors, or do not sell the bundle (as of writing, only Aziogame [or whatever they're called] sells it). Every site bumps up the price tremendously for the products (70 USD for the Amiiqo!)

EDIT: and besides, how in the world did you get it from the manufacturer itself?

It's not like it'll ever get iPhone support without some hardware modification.

Many iPhones support NFC just fine. The only problem is that Apple won't allow such an app in their store and iPhones don't support sideloading apps.

It would be more accurate to say that iPhone support will require jailbreaking and thus they are focusing on Android and the USB reader at this point.

That's a good point. You have to sideload the app via android anyway. I think it was originally available on the Google Play Store for a good day or two before it was removed.

Thank you for the review Ericzander. Just ordered one after I read through your review and watched your video.

Can't wait to try it out. Seems very easy and good for people who don't want to spend all their money for the figurines. : )

This looks awesome. Will this eventually work for skylanders characters too? I have so many all over the place, this would be awesome for those games type of games too.

Nevermind i'm looking at their site now..

No, it will never work for Skylanders. Check out the Maxlander if you want Skylnder support.

Want.

What are the chances of modding an amiibo base and popping in an amiiqo one instead? That way I could custom paint or use an infinity figure instead... heck, I could use anime figures and just glue to base...

Of course I'd also have to get the 3DSXL NFC reader which is boring white. Ugh.

Still, this is soooo much better than buying figures.

Not an expert... But I don't see any problem with taking an Amiibo, hollowing out the bottom, popping in the Amiiqo, and then going about your day.

Perhaps you could saw a figure off and solder it onto an Amiiqo base? If you can get a figure off, you an likely apply some form of adhesive.

Got my Amiibo reader for O3DSXL. Already took it apart and put it back together. I think it could be easily painted black. Wish third parties sold black case sets for reader. Shocked by how much copper wire they used for antenna. There is an odd connection point on the PCB which is visible through the battery slot. Not sure what it is used for...??? Some sort of 4-prong port connection? LED can be easily changed.

Really am interested in those NFC readers and how to get that to work? Maybe make the Amiiqo an all-in-one device for Infinity/Amiibo/Skylanders?

Heck, since most of these toys are just plastic with RFID stickers, we should be able to read even the LEGO toys and whatnot...

You do realize that most of these figures are just PVC based, right? Only parts like Lightsabers and clear/transparent parts are actual plastic.

Using Superglue Gel would work just fine. Heck, even 527 Multi-Use glue would work.

Now where did I pack my dremmel...?

Oh and uh, the RFID stickers are not worth the price you're paying. You're buying overpriced PVC figures. Punto. Fin. The End.

This is a total ripoff.

Long Live the Amiiqo!!!

Can the N2 Elite reader/writer device write on a normal blank NFC tag? Or have I to use only their emulator device?
