Making a comeback after 10 years, the next installment in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance makes a superhero landing exclusively on the Nintendo Switch! With a Warriors gameplay at its core, how does this fit into the vigilante suit?

At the start of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, we come across the Guardians of the Galaxy as they dock a spaceship in search of survivors (in reality it’s more like they’re in search of loot). That’s when they come across Thanos' minions who are on the quest for the Infinity Stones but luckily the Guardians manage to save the day...only to end up in prison...on Earth!

After breaking out of the prison, the Guardians eventually team up with other Marvel superheroes from the Avengers to the X-Men and even with notorious supervillains in order to prevent the Infinity Stones from getting into the wrong hands. And off you go with your custom team of superheroes/villains to do heroic stuff!

Plotwise, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order sounds very similar to the Marvel movies. While it’s not a carbon copy, the ultimate aim is the same as in the latest Hollywood blockbuster: prevent Thanos and co. from getting the full set of Infinity Stones and save the day. There are a few twists to the narrative, most notably involving a wider cast of characters from the Marvel Universe (Avengers, Defenders, X-Men and more in their comic book design) who you can gradually add to your team as they become available when the story progresses. To give it its due, the game does pack some cool action cutscenes worthy of an animated Marvel movie.

However, on top of the uninspired plot, the gameplay template is all too often repetitive and predictable: go to a new location, fight minions, level up and take on the boss. Those mandatory bosses at the end of every chapter pits you against infamous baddies like the Green Goblin and Ultron. However the rate of coming across a boss seems overly fast and underwhelming when you beat traditionally strong characters like Ultron within the first few hours of gameplay. The bosses can also occasionally feel overpowered, with a sudden difficulty spike forcing you to grind in order to progress. And grinding is not the most pleasant aspect of the game either, which the game present in its Infinity Trials. With hordes of similar enemies and uninspired environments, one can potentially reach to the point of rage quitting.

To prepare for stronger enemies, you can level up individual team members’ abilities and/or spend precious time fiddling with the skill tree and the ISO-8 system for stats upgrades. Your team consists of 4 characters which you can choose from the available roster (more than 30 at the time of launch, which is quite generous). With this wide cast of heroes available, you will have access to different fighting styles; Star-Lord is great for long-distance, aerial attacks while the likes of Wolverine are particularly powerful for short-range attacks. It’s a good strategy to have a balance of different attack types within the team so that you can switch to a more suitable attack type according to the situation. This is particularly the case given that your AI “ally” often wait idly or don’t aim properly, leaving you to do the heavy lifting.

Gameplay-wise, this title mostly focuses on the combat which are fairly simple to get a hold of, interspersed with some mundane moving around corridors until the eventual enemy pops up. Every character has a light, a heavy and 2 special attacks, with one of them, the Extreme Attack, being a potentially deadly finisher. There is also a cool synergy mechanic where you can link up special moves of 2 heroes for a powerful blast. This makes Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order more enjoyable in co-op so that team members can actually cooperate and its linear progression makes for an easy game to share on the go. What's more, this title supports up to 4 players co-op in offline or online mode.

Given the nature of this game, chaotic fights happen throughout the game. Occasionally, I noticed dips in the frame rate in handheld mode during particularly heated combats, especially when using the Extreme Attacks.

As a single player game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is fun when taken in bite sizes. In the long run, the gameplay feels repetitive. Even if the game shoves you with different settings and baddies, it all feels more of the same, and the need to grind does not make things better. Co-op is by far the best way to enjoy it as this is mainly a game of cooperation best savored in teams.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order - Launch Trailer

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Fun co-op mode
  • Large roster of characters
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Feels repetitive in the long run
  • Slow paced, uninspired plot
  • Dips in framerate
  • Grind
  • Unhelpful AI
7
Gameplay
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order features simplistic controls, often to its detriment, as it feels repetitive in the long run, but the additional characters in the roster bring a welcome change.
7
Presentation
While the cel-shaded aesthetic suits perfectly in the superhero universe, the re-use of the Infinity Stone saga feels uninspired despite featuring a few twists to the plot’s progression.
6
Lasting Appeal
After its 15-ish hour playthrough, a harder difficulty setting is unlocked should you want more challenge. You can then continue to fiddle some more with the stats upgrades but these did not entice me enough to go back to the game; the first run felt repetitive enough.
6.8
out of 10

Overall

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is best enjoyed in co-op mode for short bouts of time, as otherwise it feels repetitive and uninspired despite packing some simple, yet interesting combat mechanics.
Some valid critiques. I'd rate the game a bit higher, though I do wish the story was longer.

the partner AI has always been garbage in these Marvel games. You have the long range characters going in and fighting melee and getting wiped out. 4 player is really fun though. I would say this game is closer to a solid 9. If your gonna use framerate as a criteria then you should probably apply it to all the other games too.

Dang a nine? To me this is like a Warriors game without any of the refinement or polish I'd expect from one. It just doesn't feel nice to play for me, it's closer to a six lol. What pushes it higher for you?

I love that game although it has its big downers:
  • Unused characters don't get experience
  • AI heroes gladly run into every f*cking beam the enemy sends out
  • Some fights are really tough (I needed 3 or 4 tries for the full Dr. Strange battle e.g.)
  • It's not as much Diablo with Marvel skin as I wished ...
... instead it's more like a Final Fight / Double Dragon / Turtles in Time thingy which is fantastic too, just in another way.
I'm hyped about Marvel and the X-Men due to all the movies (both came to some kind of cinematic "end" recently so the hype can't be bigger). Especially the fact that my fav Magneto is in, made me very happy.
That being said, it's amazing how well they worked out every single hero and his signature moves.
Nothing feels unnatural and everyone who likes specific characters will absolutely love how they feel ingame.
I was afraid the gameplay is as boring as in LEGO games but gladly it's not, at least for me. Especially with a friend getting in, it's really like a 3D Final Fight with Marvel characters which is a great and fun thing.

I see why this hasn't got past the 7/10 here in the review but if you're a big Marvel fan, you can easily boost the score to 8.5 for you. If you're a big fan of games like the mentioned above (Final Fight and so on) it's almost a 9/10 so while I understand many consider it a moderate game, I'm really happy with it.

I liked Gaunlet (N64, GC) but always wanted to play a game that is less "canon fodder-heavy" (i.e. less enemies) but I actually didn't enjoy M. Ultimate Alliance 1 as much as I thought (even in Multiplayer).

Wow what a bummer. I used to think to myself how am I gonna afford all those games this year, guess I can scratch one off the list. A shame really, I thought it would be amazing.

You realy shouldnt put "grind" under cons. It shouldnt be there at all.
And there are to many games to list, that are played my millions over millions, and they are mostl grind based.
Warframe, Destiny, Diablo, (every Isometric action rpg), black desert online (mostly every other mmorpg too) and so on. ^^

Refinement & polish? In Warriors games?:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

@Jiehfeng This game is quite amazing, and they nailed most of the story highlights for characters (like Ultron being Pym's creation and not Stark's like in the MCU). If you're a Marvel fan I'd highly recommend it. While Prans makes good points, I think he was a bit to critical of this title.

1. If you enjoy a game, you're going to play it a lot, so grinding really shouldn't matter. The highest infinity trial is a recommended level of 65, and I'm half-way through a Superior campaign with my characters being about level 62, and I've not had to re-play very many Infinity trials at all. The ones I have, I've been trying to get 3 stars on them.

2. You can easily power-level lower level characters by placing them in higher level encounters and spending XP cubes on them which you get in abundance. A perfect time to do this is while running Infinity trials for the missed rewards from previous ones.

3. The story is a bit lack-luster, but they keep it moving to keep up with the fast-action gameplay. We've already seen this story play out in the movies, so this is just a different take on it. Also, they plan to expand the story with DLC and more characters. I'm excited to see how they involve the Fantastic 4 myself.

4. There are some frame drops, but it's on Switch so that's to be expected. I was very surprised how well it looks on a TV since I played the first half the game in hand-held mode.

In my opinion it's a solid 8/10. Another note for anyone that has trouble with Dr. Strange, or other areas, using L-guard while moving makes you invincible, so that's a pretty important technique to use throughout the entire game.

You can't really compare this to the likes of Diablo.

Here you have a squad of 4 guys. When you play halfway through the game and decide that you wanna swap Thor with Wolverine you will see Wolverine dying a lot since your whole party is at level 40 while Wolverine is level 6.
So to have all heroes equal, you would have to grind which means you play the campaign over and over again with different characters since those EXP dices you find are too rare to get more than one (!) of the unused heroes anywhere near your main party.
But since the campaign can be played over and over again (although it gets boring) you could just start over everytime with a whole new team to have your replay value. If one boss fight is too hard, just swap in one of your "old" LV40 guys and finish it off. :)

Thanks for that. I am indeed a huge marvel fan, though admittedly mostly MCU, guess I'll be picking this up after all haha.

It kind of is the perfect game for MCU fans although it's also great for comic fans or Sony MU fans.
Really it successfully managed to get all those characters in a game that feels "right".

In fact it is a 7/10 but (as I wrote above) if you're either a Marvel and/or Final Fight game style fan, this is absolutely for you, especially when you have some Marvel fans along your friends.

My only gripe with it is that it costs $60, like is it really that worth it? Cyberpunk 2077 is $30 in my country for example. Ah I'll probably get it anyway, Nintendo is not very good with sales, unless it's a really old game and becomes a select game.

The core gameplay? Yeah I'd say so. The rest of the game might be jank but in almost every Warriors game I've played the hackery and slashery feels good. In this game is simply doesn't.

It was $50 on Amazon on release day. I loved the old Legends and Alliance games so this was an instant-buy for me, but if you're skeptical you could wait a month or two as I'm sure the price will drop for a sale down the line.

i played it with 4 players on gamecube controllers. Its a nice game and one of the better games to come out in the past 2 years

This game doesn't do anything special to the genre for me. I'd compare it more to arcade beatem ups than a warriors game.

It's a blast to play with friends though. And online hasn't lagged for me so far. Not sure how the dlc content will shake things up but I don't see yet how entertaining this game will be at endgame.

I could instantly see how d3 would play out at endgame and I looked forward to how much I could still do at that point. I have 750+ hours on d3 and haven't touched the story mode. In Mua 3, I'm still burning through the 2nd difficulty out of 4...

As a X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance fan, the game is awesome. Can say everything is exactly as I expected (and thank God it's way better than MUA2).

TBH, the only con I have is about the camera. There are times in co-op that it gets REALLY annoying as you simply can't see shit.

But besides that, it's a great game. Of course it's grindy and repetitive, but it isn't a flaw of the game, but the genre itself. Playing with friends still is the way to go with MUA3 if you want the best experience possible.

I havent only mentioned diablo. Its perfectly comparable to Warframe and Destiny. :D

Haha to bad. if u liked Borderlands, than those 2 could be something for you.
Warframe was F2P, wasn't it? Might test that out on my sysNAND at some point.

I never got into Borderlands tbh. I thought it would be the perfect game for me since I like shooters and ARPGs like Diablo and Torchlight and that seemed like the perfect mix but ... dunno how to describe it ... played it for a few days with a buddy and it didn't "ignite" (that's how we would say in german lol).

Jep, Warframe is F2p except for PS4. There its 49cent.
Borderlands 1 is meh in my eyes, 2 is brilliant (but like every lootshooter, arpg etc it needs its time), and the presequell is meh again. ^^
