Product Information:

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped, 120Hz AMOLED display, 120W HyperCharge compatible, Leica optical camera lens and a few more bells and whistles: these all indicate a high-end device and they are indeed all features of Xiaomi’s current high-end model. Does the Xiaomi 13 Pro deliver as premium of an experience as its specs claim?

Xiaomi’s latest flagship models have rolled out with the recent launch of the Series 13 line and the high-end model, the Xiaomi 13 Pro, promises a premium experience and the performance to match it. Let’s take a closer look at it in this review!

Packaging and contents

Unboxing the Xiaomi 13 Pro, you’ll find the following:

  • Xiaomi 13 Pro smartphone
  • USB-C cable
  • 120W HyperCharge adapter
  • SIM eject tool
  • User manual

Hardware and content first impressions

As this is a high-end device that comes with a current premium price tag of €1,545 on the official AliExpress store, I was expecting to have some accessories included in the package but I was still holding my breath as some companies don’t even bother including chargers these days. Luckily, not only is a 120W charger included but there’s also a clear bumper and - at least in my unit - a pre-installed screen protector. I was relieved to come across the latter as it takes the load off the unnecessarily stressful task of applying the screen protector without trapped air bubbles or dust particles.

These accessories aside, I was impressed by the look and feel of the phone itself. The “3D bio-ceramic” back has a distinctive feedback to the touch that immediately identifies the smartphone as a premium product. It’s even a shame to have the bumper mask the phone’s external glory but a compromise has to be struck to protect the device while displaying it through the clear case.

Compromises have also been made in order to cram all of the shiny tech and 4820 mAh battery in the electronic slab. It’s not featherweight at 229g and not the slimmest smartphone you’ll get your hands on as it bears a thickness of 8.38mm. However, I can personally overlook these minor features given the overall package that the product delivers in terms of full-day use, fast charging and performance.

What I did mind, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, is the demise of the headphone jack. This is becoming an increasingly common feature of smartphones that favour a slimmer profile and USB-C connection. Xiaomi could have at least included a USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter but such an accessory isn’t to be found in the package. So you’ll either have to find USB-C wired earphones or stick to earbuds; options which might not be convenient for everyone.

Performance as a daily driver

One of the biggest woes with smartphones these days is that of battery life. Even if they can reach one day of use, you’ll still need to recharge which can lead to some downtimes in online access. I am always impressed by Xiaomi’s solution to this problem which is that of HyperCharge. With the included 120W charger, the phone’s 4820 mAh battery can be fully juiced up in under 20 minutes. If you’re recharging from, say, 50%, it’s going to take even less time. It’s handy enough to just plug in the phone while you’re getting ready to go out and it’ll have enough power to provide you a whole day’s use. It essentially takes off the low battery worries and using such a charger always impresses me.

With the device juiced up, you’ll find in the Xiaomi Series 13 Pro a versatile daily driver. Surfing the net, watching videos or simply browsing pictures are simply visually gorgeous on the 6.73” AMOLED display. Playing videos is enhanced through the Dolby Atmos-enabled dual speakers which deliver crisp and booming audio. These are coupled with the 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate of the screen which delivers swift and responsive controls.

One of the major features touted with the Series 13 Pro is its co-engineered aspect with Leica. The high-grade Leica optical lens of the cameras output quality videos and pictures that are fit for social media posts as well as physical printouts for framing. This goes for close-ups (like the photogenic Robin pictured below) or landscapes.

These resized shots (due to the file size) don't do the actual ones justice

However, the main downside that I have with most, if not all, Xiaomi phones is that the Android-based MIUI OS is full of bloatware. A more trimmed down UI would be welcome and provide the user with more options to customise the device based on their preferences. There will surely be custom OS but the out-of-the-box experience feels bloated with the preloaded apps.

Gaming on the Xiaomi Series 13 Pro

With the high-end specs of the Series 13 Pro, it is a natural contender for a handheld gaming device. It even ranks in the top-tier on GeekBench with 1486 single-core score and 4988 multi-core scores with a CPU benchmark, and a compute benchmark score of 8824.

Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Android games/ports such as Portal and Half-Life 2 run fluidly on the system. Emulators also fare well on the device. With Gamecube via Dolphin emulator reaching a steady 30 fps on Twilight Princess, Ridge Racer on PSP via PPSSPP at 60fps and Shadow of the Colossus on AetherSX2 hitting 60fps with 2x Upscale Multiplier toggled.

Essentially, every game and established emulator that I threw at the device ran flawlessly on the Xiaomi 13 Pro. So it’s fair to consider it more than capable of Android gaming and if you prefer physical controls, you can pair it up with a Bluetooth controller.

Review imageReview imageReview image

However, if you are looking to hook the phone up with an external monitor or AR glasses such as the Nreal Air through the USB-C port to game on a bigger screen, you’d be disappointed. The Xiaomi 13 Pro’s USB-C port does not support video output. It’s a shame as having the option to view the phone’s screen on a larger screen is always welcome. And when a high-end device such as the 13 Pro lacks such a feature, it feels like a let-down.

Wrapping up

The Xiaomi 13 Pro lives up to its marketing as a premium device as it offers a versatile package. It’s a gorgeous looking device that features an equally gorgeous display and outputs stunning pictures and videos. Packing the latest Snapdragon chip also makes it well suited for on-the-go gaming. Despite lacking video output over USB-C, it’s an easy recommendation if you’re looking for (and can afford) a well-rounded Android device that packs a premium look with the performance to match those looks.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Premium look and feel
  • Gorgeous display
  • Stunning shots with Leica lens
  • Impressively fast 120W HyperCharge feature
  • Included accessories
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Pricey
  • MIUI bloatware
  • USB-C does not support video output
  • No headphone jack
8.5
out of 10

Overall

Xiaomi’s latest high-end smartphone, the Xiaomi 13 Pro, delivers a premium performance that matches its looks.
Honestly the fact that the camera sports a Leica lens alone is enough to pique my interest. Looks like another solid offering from Xiaomi!

I've been eyeballing this phone because of the snapdragon gen 2 but maybe I'll just end up getting the Samsung Galaxy S23 and it's exclusive gen 2... not having video output is a big yikes for a flagship, a pricey one at that.

What is this, an XDA forum?
Integrated controller of go away to XDA! (and NO, BT controllers dont count)

Last Xiaomi I owned was kind of a disappointment tho in regard of the OS. Totally holds me back from even thinking of giving this one a try.

We are in 2023 headphones jack and SD card are non existent and honestly not needed.

Both have better work around
This comment makes no sense. Are you just trolling people?

Headphone jack is very essential and SD cards are also very useful for extra storage. I've got it on my devices.

U sill use wired headphones wow
EVERYBODY DOES. That's why the headphone jack is still available on laptops, tablets, computers, gaming devices, even fucking gaming controllers
The one place where it's the most useful is the one where they fucking canned it. But enjoy having to charge FUCKING HEADPHONES.

I have a Galaxy S23 and a IPhone 12 pro... I have Airpods and 2 other sets of earbuds. I've owned headphones with the wire and those easily break... I hardly see people including myself used wired headphones and thats been gone for maybe 5+ years. It's the same how computers and cars don't have a CD player /Drive.

The SD card once again should it be there maybe but there are work around if you need to expand your memory. If I need expandable storage I just use my Otg and connect a dongle with 400gb (if I'm using ROMS)

256GB can easily get the job done both my iPhone and Galaxy 23 have it. Most people hoard stuff on their phones when it should really be on a HD.

We are are guilty of having CFW putting a thousand games on a device that we never will play.

We really need to look ahead not behind.

People have to understand most flagship phones don't have a charging brick and etc that's why I don't recommend paying full price for these phones.

That's not really a good idea since it sticks out while an SD card stays hidden inside.

Trust me the dongle is more secure. I’ve had a Galaxy S7, S8, and I still have my Galaxy S10 and those have a SD slot. 9/10 times I store junk that doesn’t need to be on there.

Cell phones used to be 32gb then they jumped 64gb. Galaxy S10 series introduced 128gb which became the normal size for most phones. I buy the 256gb model for more space.

Pics and videos should be on the cloud I recommend investing $1 a month in google one they give you 100gb of space for pics and videos.

I’m my personal opinion if you have a 256gb phone that should be sufficient space.

No, they don't.

Bluetooth was never going to match wired in fidelity. And even if it does, the battery life is even more dysmal than if you use a wired set. Also, I'm not about to replace an entire automobile to use Bluetooth in it. Even if I could, that'd only matter for my personal vehicle. For my job, use of Bluetooth is a "you're getting fired" level of offense. So, no, such ignorance is not going to fly.

As to lack of SD slot... I like to root my phones. Honestly, the only time I could ever say I've been satisfied with a phone is when it was rooted at least, if not running a debloated ROM on it as well. Having an SD slot allows me to keep an imaged backup at all times. So even if things go fucky, I can restore and be back in service usually within minutes, instead of basically being without a phone until I can get home and go through restoring a backup over USB that way.

I have a Samsung phone with 128GB internal storage and I thought that was plenty for a phone, but then I started using RetroArch and things changed.

Would 256GB be enough, then? No if I'd use it to play various emulators and want plenty of games available instantly.

However, for most people who don't have large files, then 128GB and 256GB is more than enough.

@codezer0

Remember something very important on a flagship phone you're not going to see Micro SD/ Headphone Jack. As Marques Brownlee said in a video about the iPhone 7 not having an headphone jack people will be upset but they will move on and they did. Look at Samsung on the Galaxy S21 they ditched the SD card people got upset but it didn't effect the sales.

If you own a modded switch you are in maybe the 10% of users (if it is that many) it's not effecting Nintendos game sales. People who want headphone jack / micro sd is maybe less than 10% who bought it.

@Marc_LFD
But 9/10 Times (I use emulators myself) the big game files will be your PS2/Wii/Game Cube/PSP Games. In your scenario yes 128gb will not be enough but to work around that I would get a dongle. Now depending if you have the direct USB C Controller like a Gamestir X2 then unfortunately you are SOL. But if you have a MOGA controller you can have the dongle sticking out.

Believe it or not 90% of phone users don't use their phone to their maximum capability. I like to push my phone to it's limits. My Galaxy S10 played Budukai 3 like a champ on my Gamestir X2. I personally didn't try to switch emulator because #1 Skyline isn't that good it's not ready and #2 New Egg you can't apply updates which defeats the point.

You just have to manage your game space. I recommend if you game get a 256gb with a dongle combo. I just got my S23 I have to allocate 64gb internal storage for my heavy games and put the rest on a dongle. But again I'm only putting the games I'm going to play.

What are you smoking? Because I need some, apparently.

I hate current phones. There's no excuse for an S23 or whatever Samsung wants to charge $2k usd for, to have demonstrably less effective functionality than the Galaxy S 3 that sold for a fifth of that, more than a decade ago.

Even now to this day, I consternated that T-Mobile made even using my lg V20 as a phone impossible. But nowadays, I don't have a lot of options. At&t and Verizon want to arbitrarily enforce white lists for approved phones on their network. And either I switch to, will be more expensive per month.

Apple automatically gimps performance of the iphone the moment it's not actively sold, and they get rewarded for that behavior.
Samsung makes literal explosives.
Motorola was bought up by Lenovo, who promptly started suing parts suppliers, the moment I was fed up with the miserable battery of my moto x pure.

And because xda wants to hold a monopoly on who's allowed to root their phones, I'm stuck with a OnePlus phone I can't root, and is this constantly lying to me about it's actual signal or battery life.

I would RUN back to a landline, if I could. But doing so now (if it WERE feasible) would force me to give up my number I've held onto for nearly two decades.

Once again no offense but pay attention to what I'm saying. I used to be one of those guys who complained about the lack of an SD Card but eventually I've moved on. You said it yourself you don't have options.

The phone companies all want to squeeze as much $$$ out of you. IMO all phones should come with the accessories (OTG Cable, Power Brick, Headphones) Those are necessities but they are trying to get you to buy the wireless headphones and $$$. That's why I never pay full price I get good discounts off my phones.

It's only going to get worse because IMO phones are at it's peak.

Guess you still using floppy diks.
Never had a PC with floppy slot. Plus, using wired small headphones is better than wasting 300$ on Galaxy Buds or Airpods and then having them fall off on the ground where they can be damaged or destroyed. Plus, who the hell wants to charge goddamn headphones?

it falls under mobile phones not under gaming devices in my opinion man. if i wanted a mobile phone review id go to XDA.
I'm already angry that xda has a monopoly on whose allowed to root their phones. I'm firmly of the opinion they should not be allowed to have a monopoly on phone reviews, too.

That's fine, but what i meant is that i'm not interested in phones by going on this forum, but on games and gaming machines.
I couldn't care less about phones. i guess i'm just purist idk. I want gaming forum to be gaming forum, not mobile phones forum...unless they talk about mobile game in particular (which i never play...but its games, its fine)
