Product Information:

A speaker that’s portable, wireless AND doubles as a power bank?! Let’s see how it manages to handle all of those adjectives!

Have you ever wanted a speaker devoid of tangling wires that you can easily carry around and also use to juice up your tech devices? Maybe you have or maybe it’s something you haven’t even thought existed before. I fall in the latter clan and was quite intrigued about this premise which the Votomy VT360 portable wireless speaker offered.

With an Amazon listing of $59 (excluding shipping) at the time of writing, the Votomy VT360 box comes with the following items:

  • Votomy VT360 Speaker

The Votomy VT360 is built with sturdiness in mind and it shows. In addition to its stocky look, the hardware itself is a solid unit with a tough shell with rubberised ends. The majority of the body packs a textured, almost textile like mesh finish which feels nice to the touch and also helps provide additional grip. For a proper hold on the device, the package also includes a lanyard which you can knot around the handle on one of the device’s ends. I would still prefer if there was a handle to grab on (or maybe I’m just too nostalgic of the Gamecube aesthetic).

Nevertheless, the device is said to be shockproof and its build is definitely sturdy enough to handle bumps and even short falls; making it an appropriate hardware to bring out and about. Adding to its sturdiness is its IPX67 water resistance rating, enabling it to withstand light rain and accidental splashes.

Still on the looks, the Votomy VT360 packs a rather minimal aesthetic. The only hardware keys you will find are on its upper side and are well visible, large enough to provide decent tactile feedback and are also easy to reach. However, it is a rather conspicuous block of tech and I wish it was slimmer. However, the bulky hardware is likely due to the shockproof feature and is a compromise on the aesthetic.

At the back is a thick rubberised flap shielding some ports. You’ll find a micro-USB for charging the speaker, an AUX port as well as a regular USB 3.0 port. The latter provides access to one of the VT360’s standout features: the ability to charge other devices.

Indeed, in addition to powering the device itself, the 5200 mAh built-in battery can also double as a power bank for your other tech. Sure it doesn’t hold as much juice as a dedicated power bank but it can help in a jiffy and I find it to be a rather handy addition that makes this speaker rather versatile. You can even use the speaker to listen to music and charge a device at the same time. But bear in mind that the speaker as well relies on that 5200 mAh battery to function; and on its own I found it to last around 7 hours. So expect less if you plan to charge other devices as well.

To use the speaker, you have to power it on and pair it as you would with any other regular Bluetooth device. While powering on and pairing, the VT360 speaker outputs some rather funky, sci-fi-esque sounds that sound rather original. With the Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, the connection is stable and I haven’t come across any issues on that front.

Once powered on, you can start streaming music or even videos from the source device. The Votomy VT360 delivers a crisp soundscape that slightly leans on the bass but overall the audio output is very decent, with balanced treble and mids. It can also be very loud, considering its size, and that’s thanks to its 30-watt drivers and dual stereo speakers; so it works as a good companion to your smartphone to blast your game’s soundtrack or your favourite Spotify playlist. In fact, the VT360 can work as an extension to your phone with its built-in speaker. It’s a serviceable feature as it does deliver fine vocals but doesn’t filter background noise.

Of course, you can also pair it with a laptop/desktop and the sound quality will be just as good. But for your set up, you might want to look at other options like the Creative Sound BlasterX Katana. The VT360 is more geared towards on-the-go use, so best think of it in these terms.

But should you still want the VT360 in your main set up, you could consider its TWS feature. You’ll need a second VT360 speaker and pair them together, with each functioning as a right/left channel of a stereo system. But this will mean you will need to purchase a second device.

Even if the VT360 is geared towards portable and wireless use, I still very much appreciated the inclusion of an AUX port. This makes the device compatible with non-Bluetooth audio sources and adds to the versatility of the speaker.

While Votomy included such features to make the VT360 more versatile, it could have gone a bit further to make it a more compelling $59 buy. It could have packed a bigger battery (although that would make it heavier), an SD card slot to turn it into a standalone device or a basic clock/alarm function. But at the very least, they could have included an AUX cord which is nowhere to be found in the package.

All things considered though, the Votomy VT360 is a decent portable wireless speaker that delivers quality audio while packing a handy power bank feature. It’s a viable extension to your phone that will be put to use while hiking or road trips or even to up the volume on your favourite game.

Overall

Wireless, portable and doubling as a power bank, the Votomy VT360 lives up to those versatile adjectives while delivering quality audio on-the-go.
Also, why is there a horizontal scrollbar for text below the first photo ("The Votomy VT360 is built with sturdiness in mind and it shows.")? That makes no sense, and it makes reading that portion marginally annoying.
