Why charge one laptop slowly, when you can charge three quickly? GaN (gallium nitride) chargers take the annoyance of having a ton of different cables for your respective devices, and condense things into a single charging block, all without having to worry about overheating or being unable to output enough wattage. UGREEN takes that idea even further, with its 200W Nexode charger, which can theoretically be the one and only charger that you'll ever need.
The special thing about the UGREEN charger is in its very straightforward name; it can output 200W of energy through six different USB-A and USB-C ports. Your average phone brick will usually only get 20W, and even most other hubs on the market cap out at 100W or 120W at the most, making the UGREEN one pretty special. Because of that, it also commands a special price, at $199.99. When you consider that, you need to take into account that the UGREEN Nexode is meant to be a cutting-edge, top-of-the-line kind of piece of tech. That being said, if you are the kind of person who enjoys niche devices, or high-end electronics, then the UGREEN definitely delivers.
This seems most ideal for those that have a lot of devices laying around that are in constant use--in my case, I could keep my Nintendo Switch, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Nexdock lapdock, and Galaxy S10 all charging at a respectable pace, without overloading the charger. The setup is a little confusing to get used to, because none of the ports are labeled, but the UGREEN 200W outputs PD 100W on the two leftmost USB-C. If you happen to plug anything else into the other three middle USB-C ports, the power will shift to 65W apiece on the left, and if you fill up every single slot, it'll split things to a balance of 65W/45W/45W/20W/5V4A/5V4A. I wish this was noted somewhere on the charger itself, because it's hard to keep those specifics memorized, so if you ever need to know exactly how much juice you're getting, you'll need the cheat sheet included in the product manual.
Either way, even if you max out the slots, you'll still get USB Power Delivery, and "Super Fast Charging" support on the two left ports of the charger, which is enough to charge two laptops up fairly well, while still powering a Nintendo Switch, two Android phones, and an iPod. Given the fact that this would normally require three different power bricks and three smaller chargers, all of which would need to be plugged into the wall, the UGREEN Nexode saves on a ton of space, and power outlet real estate. The plug for the charger is a simple grounded three-prong plug that stretches about 6ft--enough to route it somewhere and make your cables look nice and neat. I did find that the charger's plug had a tendency to fall out of the back if it had the slightest bit of stress on it, but other than that, the build quality and charging quality were superb. You also get two very nice braided USB-C cables, which were especially useful.
Going back to the price tag of the UGREEN Nexode 200W charger, $200 is a lot of money to throw down for a charger. With so few other name-brand 200W chargers available, you're paying for the convenience of not having to deal with 6 separate cables going all over the place. If you're constantly on the go, and need your devices topped up and ready at a moment's notice, I would recommend this wholeheartedly, because the ease is worth the cost. If not, then you'll have to weigh just how important elegance and fancy new tech is to your setup.
Verdict
- Never got hot, despite charging 6 things at once
- Takes up very little space
- Useful for fast charging two things together at 100W each
- The device's plug can easily come loose
- Its price point makes it a little niche
- Lacks labels on the ports
