TT Games are back with another Lego title for 2016 - Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Being the resident reviewer of Lego games, it's nice to finally play a title with some new ideas, despite the majority of the tried and tested Lego formula still being firmly present. The new additions are enough to make the game feel fresh.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens not at the start of the movie as you would expect, but at the end of Return of The Jedi. We get to battle through the forest of Endor, take control of the Ewoks, wreck AT-ST's using a variety of puzzling contraptions before being transported to the Death Star, and fighting the epic battle against the Emperor.

Playing through the prologue is great fun, even though we've done it before in previous Lego Star Wars titles, it has never been on this scale with such attention to detail. After destroying the Death Star the main Force Awakens campaign starts which consists of 10 chapters containing 5 hub worlds. Hub worlds feel quite small but there is a lot to do in each one, especially if you are going for the 100% completion, which is the main aim of the standard Lego titles.

What's New?

It was high time TT Games added some new mechanics to the Lego series, and what has been put into LSW:TFA is a great start. The most drastic addition, which I wouldn't believe until I saw it for myself, is a cover based shooter mechanic. It actually makes sense in Star Wars when so many of the cast have blasters and rifles etc. and it works well in breaking up the usual, very repetitive structure of the standard Lego gameplay.

General building mechanics have been changed up too. As well as the normal destroy-and-build objects, LSW:TFA features brand new multi-builds where objects can be destroyed multiple times and built into different devices, which creates various ways to solve puzzles or find collectables using the same initial dump of bricks. Although this is a new feature and is a good way to add to the usual gameplay, it would have been nice to see more progress in this area.

Stay on target

Easily my favourite part of the game is the flying missions. I was generally surprised when playing through these dogfights at just how well made and how fun the pilot sections are. They looks visually stunning, are faithfully recreated and play perfectly. I would honestly buy a game that was made up entirely of missions like these, perhaps a bit more advanced, but still, I need a new X-Wing game!

LSW:TFA is a refined, focused entry in the Lego franchise that is well worth your time, even if you are suffering with a bit of Lego fatigue like myself. Having played 4 of the 5 last major Lego games (we skipped Dimensions), I still had a great time playing this one, both alone to unlock the harder stuff for my son, and then free-play co-oping levels with the newly acquired characters and vehicles together. If you've played a Lego title from the last 10 years, you should know what to expect here, but know that this is easily the best the series has been in recent years.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • New gameplay mechanics
  • Flying levels
  • Great humour
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Some puzzles may be too complicated for younger players
8
Gameplay
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a few new mechanics to freshen up what was starting to feel like a stagnated series. Apart from that it is business as usual.
9
Presentation
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks fantastic graphically and faithfully recreates the best parts from the movie using that famous Lego charm.
8
Lasting Appeal
The main campaign took around 10hrs to finish but there are loads of side missions, secrets and collectables to find to get that 100%. This time around there are over 200 characters from the entire Star Wars cinematic universe to unlock as well.

Overall

This is the best Lego game since Lego Marvel Super Heroes and whether you are a Lego fan or Star Wars fan, or both; there is a lot to like and have fun with in Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The graphics have a bunch of improvement when compared to old Lego games.
I would have been happy if it was also for the wii with less graphics.

Nice to see a review on this. I haven't seen this game much attention after its announcement.

Nice. I had a feeling this game was pretty good, especially for one to play with a child. Good to know to keep this in mind as a birthday present option haha.

I played the demo of this game on my PS4 weeks ago. The shooting mechanic was a nice addition. The part where you ride the Millenium Falcon and shoot TIE Fighters was excellent.

Nice review overall. I'll get it soon.

Huh. Having not played a Lego game since Star Wars: Complete Saga (And even then, it was briefly; I mainly played SW I and II on the old Gamecube [ah, those were the days]), this might be a game to look into if its really that good. Maybe what I do is play the PC version with a GC controller hooked up via adapter.

Lmao, that game was my childhood. The only reason I love it is nostalgia.
Oh, and I loved the mutlplayer Bounty Hunter modes with deathmatch and such. Especially with Jango Fett unlocked. Still wish I knew what the heck the bonus "Sandbox" level was for.

I found out about that level by hacks because there was a cannister I could never find. Also, multiplayer made my ds crash with this particular game.

I SO HAVE TO BUY THIS NOW. But you say best lego game since Marvel Superheroes, did you play LEGO City? That game is literally the best, aside from the loading times and rare glitches.

Unfortunately I haven't as I've never owned a WiiU. I was hoping they'd port it to PS4 but I think that time has passed now. Do you know if the 3DS version is any good? I might get it on that for my son.

It is good, but not comparable to it's console counterpart, but still good on it's own nonetheless. I had much fun with it before I got to play the Wii U version.

I just got this game yesterday, and I'm loving it so far! This one is really done well. I've been playing LEGO Batman 3 for a bit, but something about that just bores me to death... This however is different. It just keeps you interested all the way, and the game looks beautiful on PC. <3

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Hope you've had a good morning.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

I think that's why I focus on just enjoying single player experiences that aren't too competitive

    How are you doing?

There's also this thing where I'm hyperfocused at night and cannot get to sleep.

    @Maximumbeans, I'm doing alright, thanks.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
