Some say it’s impossible to find a great speaker without spending a fortune. However, the EarFun UBOOM aims to prove those people wrong. But does it live up to that promise? Let’s find out!

The EarFun UBOOM is designed for those on a tight budget who want a great portable speaker with a 360 degree sound radius. For only $50, this is a great bang for your buck! EarFun is a brand that was established in 2018 and has really been making a name for itself the past two years. Their relatively recent entry into the audiophile industry hasn’t deterred them from making great products. Their website states that:

“The EarFun team is driven by a passion for music and a commitment to delivering solutions that use the latest technology to improve sound for audio products.

To bring our vision for creating the ultimate true wireless earbuds to reality, the team has dedicated several months to every aspect of the product from design to delivery to ensure a great end-to-end experience for their loyal customers.

EarFun believes that technology can enhance modern lifestyles and seamlessly fit within the fabric of our lives.”

It seems that EarFun’s focus is primarily on wireless earbuds, so how does their speaker hold up? Well I have to say, very nicely!

Starting with the design, this speaker is packaged rather professionally in a yellow and white box with the “EarFun” logo on it. With the speaker comes the user manual and a USB-C cable which is used to charge the speaker. No frills here, just everything that you need to get started. The speaker is surrounded by firm fabric material that looks and feels very professional as well as hard plastic on the top and bottom. There is also a yellow strap on the speaker to connect it to a keychain and carry it around with you easily.

I’m a big fan of heavy bass in my music and these speakers handily deliver on that front; more than you would expect from a $50 speaker. The mids and highs are great as well. The speaker offers 360 omnidirectional sound and IPX7 waterproofing which means it can theoretically be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes. While I don’t recommend swimming or showering with this speaker, I can recommend bringing it to the pool or bathroom with you. And wow, this speaker can fill a room. I recently used it on a two hour drive in a car, not connected to anything but itself, and I could only listen to it at about a quarter of the volume (using indoor mode) without it blasting my eardrums. While this won’t be able to compete with audio equipment that costs hundreds of dollars, you would be hard pressed to find sound quality as loud and crisp (using outdoor mode) as this at the same price point. It should be noted that you lose a bit of that awesome bass that I was talking about earlier when listening to it at high volumes, but I never felt that was something to be concerned about.

There are several control functions on the top of the speaker. In addition to the power button it has two volume rocker buttons, a button to connect to Bluetooth devices, a stereo toggling button, and an outdoor mode button. Connecting to Bluetooth is very simple and I was able to connect it to my phone and PC in seconds, with just a single button press on the speaker being all that it takes to put it into pairing mode.

EarFun claims that this speaker gets up to 16 hours of battery life and in my short time with the speaker that seems about accurate to me. After all, aside from a Bluetooth connection and 24 watts of audio playback, there aren’t a lot of resources draining the speaker’s power. I only had the opportunity to play with one of these speakers but there is an option to connect it to a second speaker to play stereo sound as well as a 3.5mm port to listen to it wired.

At only $50 one would find it very difficult to find a similar quality portable speaker with omnidirectional sound with a battery life, waterproofing, and audio quality that matches this. I highly recommend it to any audiophile on a budget.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Very loud speaker with booming bass and crisp mids and highs
  • Compact and very portable
  • IPX7 waterproofing
  • Extremely simple to use
  • Affordable at only $50
What We Didn't Like ...
  • I think the yellow strap takes away from the speaker's sleek design a bit. I would have preferred an option to have choose a different color strap.
