8BitDo have stepped up and brought their rival to Nintendo's Seminal Pro Controller. With the Ultimate Bluetooth + 2.4g controller and charging dock: we have a £59.99 bundle that should compete for that top spot. Featuring Hall effect joysticks, an RF adaptor for use on Windows/Mac etc, and a charging dock, is the 8BitDo worth a crack?

A Sensory Delight

Picking the controller up out of the box, you can immediately feel the grippy, tactile, embossing on the rear. It reminds me a lot of the DualSense texturing that rumbles across your fingertips and helps you connect to the controller.

On the front, you have your dual analogue sticks, A-symmetrical, and solid feeling, made with magnetic magic that should avoid drift and fatigue. You have your A, B, X and Y buttons, a plus and minus, a star button that acts as a screenshot button, and a glowing home button to take you home. On the top you have the left and right triggers and bumpers, as well as the pairing button, the USB-C socket for wired connectivity, and an LED to indicate charging/pairing modes. Toward the aft, you will find the two programmable paddles and the BT/2.4G switch too. Underneath is simply just the connectors for charging.

Where is the 3.5mm jack for headphones? The answer is that there isn't one, but it's not surprising given that the Official Nintendo Pro controller also doesn't sport a 3.5mm socket either. I would have thought that there would be one in the titularly "Ultimate" controller, but looking around at any competitors' controllers, there are very few that offer wireless connectivity and a headphone jack, it's usually the option of wired with a jack, or wireless without.

The rumble produced by this controller is noteworthy here too. I have experienced many third-party controllers for the switch, and my main bone of contention stems from the weak or jarring rumble effects that always feel like an afterthought: though that is entirely not the case here!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe felt incredible when playing with this controller, I gave the latest wave of courses a blast when testing out this controller and I really appreciated the intensity and smoothness of the vibration feedback. I could definitely get used to using this controller as my daily driver for the Switch, it feels THAT good... but then it came into my mind: where is the NFC support?

No, you cannot scan your Amiibo in with this pad either, it doesn't contain NFC functionality either, but it does have well-refined Gyro capabilities, and can be remapped and adjusted to the nth degree with the companion app, so that's a pretty fair trade-off really.

The Future is Magnetic

The hall effect joysticks are excellent and give you unprecedented levels of control with your thumbs, combined with the peace of mind that these things will never go wonky on you. The magnetic sensors mitigate any wear and tear via contactless technology, which means you can use it 24/7 without fear of drift. I paired the controller to my Switch, went straight into the Settings and Controller Calibration settings and drew perfect circles with them, edge to edge, and really understood just how solid these little sticks are.

Now that Hall Effect Joy-Con replacement analogue sticks exist I can definitely see more companies, such as Nintendo, hopping on the bandwagon and using this style stick going forward, it would surely cost them less in replacements than the initial outlay to bump up the quality at production. If you hadn't gathered already I am entirely impressed with the Hall Effect Joysticks.

A Feature-Packed Peripheral

Firstly, the Dock seats your controller nicely on your desktop or next to/behind your TV allowing you to easily store and tidy it away. It also looks superb when lit up and glowing to indicate charging. Secondly, the dock hides the little stylized 8BitDo RF dongle within it for storing away and keeping it all together. You can stick the dongle in your intended device, pair the pad using the BT/2.4g toggle on the rear of the pad, and play! Lastly, the dock itself actually acts as a USB extender, and this is clever for both allowing you to use it as a USB extender for any other wired peripherals, and secondly with the USB dongle plugged in it gives you more range should you position it in such a fashion that its furthest from your console and closest to your playing position!

Ultimate Compatibility

Compatible with Steam Deck thanks to an update, it's as simple as connecting the device in X-Input mode and bingo, you're up and playing in seconds. I was recently gifted a Steam Deck Dock for Christmas so I could test the Switch and Steam Deck compatibility on my 60" 4K TV with this controller, and I have to say I was incredibly impressed!

Games like Cyberpunk, Trombone Champ and Second Extinction really played smoothly and felt superb with this pad connected to the Deck, and with mapped-out buttons and when connected to the big screen via the dock: it really feels like a super-powered console with an insanely good controller to boot.

You can also use this controller with the dongle on Raspberry Pi, Steam, Windows 10 and above, and with Bluetooth connectivity, you can also use this on Android 9+ and IOS and it's as simple as pairing and mapping/calibrating!

There is also a companion app (which works on IOS/Android and Windows 10+) so you can tweak your stick dead zones for higher precision, dial-in your triggers range for speedier reflexes, customize button layout for emulators and "the sake of it", map buttons to the paddles, and also craft macros to shorten your most complexed inputs to make your games even better!

Highly Recommended

As third-party controllers go, this one is worth a look because it looks fantastic, feels fantastic and works incredibly well. It's a shame there isn't a one-for-all which sees this pad work on the PS4/5/XSX/XSS etc as well, but obviously, the button designations would be wrong, and the cost would probably get driven up too.

I cannot fault 8BitDo's ability to put together a stunning controller, because it ticks all major boxes and is pretty darned deserved of that "ultimate" moniker. At £60, with a dock, and with 2.4G and BT connectivity: this is certainly one to invest in if you happen to own any combination of the compatible devices/OS's as it's nigh on perfect.

Bar the tiny details of the absent 3.5mm jack and no NFC capabilities: the 8BitDo Ultimate Wireless Controller is notably awesome in all other departments including the 15hr battery life!

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • A solid controller that feels superb to hold
  • Fantastic rumble effect & awesome Hall Effect sticks
  • Mappable buttons, stick/trigger sensitivity, and gyro functions
  • 15hr battery life from just 480mAh battery
What We Didn't Like ...
  • No Amiibo support
  • No headphone socket

Overall

This is a superb alternative to the official Nintendo Pro controller (sans the amiibo support). The battery life is great, the rumble is excellent, and the nice tidy-away dock is a joy to keep your gaming peripherals in check and ready for action the next time you get a chance to play.
The no amibo or hd rumble should never count as a con, because it's illegal to put in, if they were allowed, they'd do it already, your review is okay, but putting a con for the sake of putting one is not okay.
it's a con compared to the pro controller. whether it's beyond their ability to do so or not, the only thing that matters is the end result for the user. if the pro controller has a feature others don't, then it needs to be stated. It would have been an oversight not to mention it and put it in the cons.

Well i assumed you didn't compare it to the pro, since you didn't put the very low price compared to the pro in the pros, cheers mate.

I got this as soon as it went live for purchase, I love this thing! My pros and cons are little different than the review.

Biggest con for me is the shape. It is slight bigger than it should a believe, It is not by much, but it makes it less comfortable than the pro. Also, the snes buttuons are not compatible anymore with this 8bitdo product. They are with most 8bitdo controllers so I always had my concave Y and X ensured, now I have not that anymore (the holes are the same size, but the new buttons are thicker, so it will work only if you put a microswitch or something like that on the board).

My pros are:

- the buttons on the fucking right position!!!! Y is on left, B is on bottom and no matter that Microsoft exists because makes no sense make controllers for the 5 people that are accustomed with xbox layout instead of making controllers on the standard that people are used to since 1990.

- the 2.4/Bluetooth switch - if you are using in two devices, just flip a switch and it will connect to your other thing very easy and fast

- the dock - never ever worry about recharging a controller again

The no amibo or hd rumble should never count as a con, because it's illegal to put in, if they were allowed, they'd do it already, your review is okay, but putting a con for the sake of putting one is not okay.
Not for the sake of it: some of us are Amiibo fanatics… I didn’t realise it was illegal… we are all learning.

Also I praised the rumble, I put no headphone Jack as the other con.

They could very much add Amiibo support. Nintendo does not own the rights to it. It's just basic NFC technology.

How do ergonomics and build quality compare to the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro?
The GuliKit seems to share the xbox one/series controller ergonomics, so how well does the 8bitdo do compared to the xbox controllers?

the 8bitdo and guilikit seemt to be two best after market controllers for switch+pc compatibility out there and i just dunno what to get...

Also. No Bluetooth support for PC. You have to use a dongle to connect to PC = all my slots on my Laptop.

I can't stress enough times I had drifting issues across all the controllers I'd used, this might very well be a valid option

IMO Microsoft's is the ultimate. Nothing come close. ( do kind of suck that there is no rechargeable battery built in )
Too bad it won't work natively with a Switch and it can't wake the Switch up.

Does this 8bitdo wakes the Switch up?

HORI makes good controllers

One con for those with PC compatibility is the ZL and ZR becomes worst off on a Switch due to the need to support analogue input on PC. Small price to pay for PC compatibility yes, ultimate no.

Yes, but you need to press the led button on the control and shake it.

I've already ordered one, I'm just waiting for it to arrive to use it on PC, I've been using a Wii classic pro controller and I got bored of having to connect it to the wiimote XD

Amiibos are literally just NFC chips with copyrighted data. It's not illegal for 3rd party controller manufacturers to include an NFC reader. HD rumble is just haptic feedback too, Nintendo could potentially have a patent for. These aren't things Nintendo created or own, these are existing technologies. They just slap their branding on them.

No mention of the d-pad? I saw another review saying it's not that great, not as good as a Nintendo d-pad.
The d-pad is indeed great, it's the same from the pro line of products. 8bitdo knows how to do a proper d-pad. That said, this controller is meant for 3D games, so they moved the d-pad out of the prime spot. For 2D games I keep using the pro 2 over this one.

Well this is a goddamn downgrade from the Pro 2 - and even the original Pro and GamePad.
Why switch to unaligned sticks? There's already so many of that controller type out there, and not enough with aligned sticks, which just feel so much more comfortable if you're used to PlayStation DualShocks/Sense and Nintendo's Wii Classic and Wii U GamePad and Pro controllers.

very useful gamepad
With the application of the hall sensor, it was freed from the drift of the analog stick.

I have the Pro 2 and their arcade stick and both are excellent. I use them with my Switch, PC and Raspberry Pi.

They wouldnt have a chance though. They are not the only ones to use NFC, Android phones use NFC.
Since when has logic ever stopped Nintendo Legal? Nintendo legal still acts like it's 1985 when their exclusivity agreements were still legal.

In most those cases that is due to Japan's lack of fair use laws. But this is an instance where they quite literally wouldnt even try. In fact there are already 3rd party controllers with NFC.

Joycon and pro controller spoil the good name of Nintendo. It breaks the good reputation of Nintendo making reliable hardware that last a long time. Two pairs of broken joycons and two broken pro controllers sure look bad on Nintendo. Those joycons were hardly used and the pro controllers were not being punished by aggressive game play.

The disappoint from 8bitdo is the material they used for the stick got sticky ( fixed with a third party cap ). For a long time third party ones can't wake up the Switch so that is also the disappointment from 8bitdo.

I'd love to buy one of these, but at its current price, it's more than what I would be willing to pay for. At least I have my SN30 Pro 2 controller to keep me company.

You should review the FLYDIGI APEX3 Controller for NINTENDO Switch/PC/ANDROID/iOS !
It totally wreck any other controller on the market, even the 8BITDO and the KingKong2Pro ! The trigger effect configuration works amazingly on PC and even on Switch, it's great to have feedback in the trigger when playing shooting and racing game.
Game compatibility on Steam/GOG is really something, playing Cyberpunk on PC with that controller is another level of immersion.
Also the Program to customize the controller is really well made and responsive.
I assure you that you will never use another controller again after trying this one !
